ZIL-4331
- Car make: ZIL
- Country of origin: USSR
- Year of manufacture: 1986
- Body type: Truck
A modern replacement for the legendary ZIL-130 truck. Developed to special order, the “4331” models have a wide range of capabilities, but are not without their drawbacks, which everyone has. The Likhachev plant in this version presented the first diesel truck produced in Russia. The entire ZIL model range.
Car history
Since 1962, the Likhachev Plant in Moscow has produced a truck for the national economy under the ZIL-130 brand. The truck was extremely popular and practical, but was inferior to its classmates due to high fuel consumption. At the end of the seventies, the plant began developing a more economical model with a diesel engine. Namely, in the 70s, the designers of the Likhachev plant received the task of developing two advanced trucks with different load capacities.
The models were supposed to run on diesel fuel. Initially, the car was designed by ZIL specialists, but after the design was created, the documentation was transferred to Naberezhnye Chelny. In 1986, the first ZIL-4331 began to roll off the assembly line. It was this model that was intended to replace the ZIL-130. Shortly after the launch of the project, the debut version of this model with a double cab was presented, as well as a chassis designed for special vehicles. Later, specialists from the Likhachev plant created a racing version of the truck, which resembled the original only in appearance.
Cabin and body
First of all, the appearance of the cabin has changed. It acquired angular, clearly defined outlines without smooth transitions. The body is made entirely of metal and has a common base. However, its layout is not entirely standard. The main difference is that the fenders, hood and front grille are made from one rigid piece.
Access to the engine is provided by lifting this structure up and forward on hinges that are attached to the front bumper on the vehicle's power frame. At the same time, it has become very convenient to repair the engine; access to all engine systems is available. Over time, this method was abolished due to some inconveniences in operation.
In subsequent versions of the model, the hood opens in the usual “alligator” way. At the front of the ZIL-4331 truck, a new front bumper is installed, into which headlights and turn signals are mounted. Moreover, they are structurally located in such a way that there is the least danger of damage in the event of an accidental collision. Inside, the cabin has become more comfortable.
The comfortable driver's seat is sprung and adjustable in all directions. Two passengers can sit side by side. The middle seat lifts up to create a table. The large glass area of the cabin and side mirrors allow you to fully control the road situation.
The ZIL cabin of the “4331” model is equipped with excellent heat and sound insulation, which allows you to talk inside the truck without raising your voice, and also not experience inconvenience due to cold weather. There are three seats, one of them is the driver's seat. One of the most popular was the modification with a berth, which appeared in the early 90s.
The model received a universal bumper “skirt”, fairings on the sides of the body and a drag foiler installed on the roof. ZIL-4331, in comparison with foreign analogues, stood out for its significantly lower cost. In addition to the cabin designed for three people, versions with a 2-row cabin version with 7 seats were also produced.
The ZIL-4331 flatbed body is a wooden platform with metal transverse base bars, with folding rear and side sides. The body design provides for the possibility of installing extension sides and an awning with a frame.
ZIL dump truck model 433180 - full review
Since the late 90s to this day, domestic cars have been going through difficult times. Despite this, the plant does not postpone the development of new truck models until later, but on the contrary, makes every effort to ensure that this or that model is mass-produced. Thus, the most successful projects of ZIL’s “crisis times” can rightfully be considered models of medium-duty vehicles of the “Bychok” family and heavy trucks called ZIL-433180 (flatbed modifications and dump trucks). Moreover, the latter gained great popularity immediately after its debut on the domestic market. So, let's take a closer look at what the ZIL dump truck model 433180 is.
Design
The appearance of the new product turned out to be very successful, harmonious and even attractive. The “donor” for the development of the cabin was model 4331, which had been in mass production since 1992. In contrast, the ZIL dump truck model 433180 has a more elongated hood and interior design, although, if you look at the new product in profile, the overall layout still resembles its older brother, model 4331. The front fascia now has a more modern look - a new radiator grille and a slightly modified bumper give the car an attractive appearance.
Interior
Unfortunately, the positive changes affected only the external appearance - all the details in the cabin remained as old and poor as those of the 1992 “donor”. Black leatherette seats, black instrument panel, and even the enamel on the metal parts is also painted black. The only thing that changes the picture is the multi-colored arrows of the tachometer and speedometer, which somehow decorate the interior. Otherwise, the new car is a modernized copy of the Soviet hard worker, called “ZIL-131”.
Dump truck ZIL-433180 and its technical characteristics
The main features of the new product lie under the hood. The car is initially equipped with a modern Minsk-made turbodiesel engine “MMZ D 260.11”, which meets the Euro-2 environmental standard. The unit has considerable power (178 horsepower) and a torque of 708 N/m. Such a truck is capable of lifting loads weighing up to 8 tons, while its Soviet counterpart ZIL-130 dump truck (diesel) lifted only 5 tons of bulk materials. This is really great progress for the company, especially since the wheel formula of the new product remains the same - 4x2.
Despite the fact that, according to the passport data, the new product consumes about 22 liters of diesel fuel per hundred kilometers, many drivers claim that the real fuel consumption is approximately 19 liters. This makes the truck even more attractive in terms of profitability.
Types and demand for ZIL dump truck
Today, several modifications of this truck are mass-produced. This can be an onboard vehicle, a chassis (can be equipped with an isothermal van, a refrigeration unit, a dump body or converted into a garbage truck) of models 433182 and 433180, as well as another ZIL dump truck of the 494582 series. If you look at the sales statistics, you can see that the truck is in stable demand. The only catch is the small scale of production, so you can’t see it even in Russia often, or at least less often than the 4331st ZIL.
Specifications
Engine
It is ZIL-4331 that is considered the founder of the first Russian line of trucks with diesel power plants. Fuel consumption of ZIL 4331 is from 18 l/100 kilometers. If we talk about a road train, then its consumption already starts from 25 liters per hundred.
It is extremely rare, but still, you can find gasoline engines on trucks of the “4331” model. When operating a car with gasoline engines, consumption is approximately 30-36 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90-95 km/h and may vary depending on the load.
ZIL 4331
ZIL 4331 is a domestic truck produced by the Likhachev plant.
The model is one of the most popular in its segment. Currently, over 1.6 million of these machines have been produced. The model stands out for its large load capacity, high maneuverability, maintainability and many other advantages. At the same time, the cost of ZIL 4331 is noticeably lower in comparison with its competitors. ZIL 4331 is in high demand even now. The model is practically free of drawbacks and is easy to use, which is what attracts the Russian consumer. The car is not afraid of hard work, therefore it is used in many areas: construction, agriculture and housing and communal services. Quite a lot of ZIL 4331 vehicles are used by rescue and fire services.
ZIL-4331: description and technical characteristics
One of the most common dump trucks today is ZIL-4331.
It has fairly good cross-country ability, high load capacity, maintainability, and many other advantages. Also, its cost is a compromise compared to many similar trucks.
Most often you can find the ZIL-4331, equipped with a ZIL-645 engine. The most common diesel is used as fuel for this engine.
ZIL-645 is unpretentious and will happily work on any diesel fuel. Its operating and technical parameters are quite impressive:
- working volume – 8.74 l;
- maximum possible power at 2,800 rpm – 185 hp. With.;
- the maximum possible torque on the engine shaft is 510 N×m (at 1,500-1,700 rpm);
- number of working cylinders – 8 pcs.;
- cylinder arrangement – V-shaped;
- number of valves (two for each cylinder) – 16 pcs.;
- number of cycles in one working cycle – 4.
General information
The history of the creation of the ZIL 4331 car begins in the 1970s. At that time, the USSR experienced a serious shortage of new productive equipment with high performance characteristics. The situation was entrusted to the specialists of the Likhachev plant to correct it. Together with representatives of the Kama Automobile Plant, they developed a fundamentally new model, which was based on one of the KamAZ modifications. The truck featured improved lighting, a new engine and a more modern design. The result of our collaboration was amazing. Specialists have created a new car with high reliability and cross-country ability.
The debut prototype was presented in 1977. He was destined to become the founder of a new family of products for the plant - diesel trucks. In the early 1980s, the vehicle was assigned the ZIL 4331 index. The car was finalized until 1985, after which the final design was approved. In 1987, the ZIL 4331 family entered the production line. The first versions received a 150-horsepower ZIL 508.10 gasoline unit, complemented by a 5-speed manual transmission. Later, diesel modifications appeared. For the model, an atmospheric diesel 165-horsepower ZIL 165 unit with volume-film mixture formation was developed. It worked in tandem with a mechanical synchronized 9-speed transmission.
Specifications
Depending on the modification, the car can have a carrying capacity from 6000 to 8000 kg. The curb weight of the car is 5500 kg. Wheel formula – 4 by 2.
Average fuel consumption with a full load at a speed of 60 km/h is 18.4 l/100 km (25.7 l/100 km in a road train). The maximum speed on a straight asphalt road is 95 km/h (85 km/h in a road train). The braking distance when driving at full load is 25 m (26.5 m in a road train). The car's fuel tank holds 170 liters of fuel.

Device
Structurally, the ZIL 4331 was a seriously modernized version of the ZIL 130 model with a completely redesigned cabin. The basis of the car was a powerful frame with increased strength. The dependent suspension of the drive axle included a set of semi-elliptical springs with sliding end parts. A pair of shock absorbers functioned here together with the springs. The rear suspension was also dependent and consisted of a pair of springs and additional mechanisms. Due to this arrangement, the truck could withstand quite heavy loads and could operate as part of a road train with a total weight of up to 23,000 kg.

Homemade cars
Restoration of the ZIL-433180 truck: detailed photo report of the work done.
A guy named Sergei decided to buy a truck for work and restore it with his own hands, so to speak, his hands were itching to sort through something. Once, he was offered to buy a ZIL, and on another day off the guy went to look at it.
ZILok turned out to be not a simple one - a “flatbed” truck with an increased carrying capacity of up to 8 tons. Engine D-260, inline 6, Euro-2, 185 horses. It’s in pretty good condition, but there’s still something to put your hands to.
ZIL-433180 - a basic on-board vehicle with a payload capacity increased to 8000 kg, diesel MMZ D-260.11E2 (R6, 7.12 l, 178 hp, Euro-2), wheelbase 4500 mm, overall turning radius at the outer point - 8.6 m, curb vehicle weight 6200 kg, 9-speed manual transmission, reference fuel consumption at 60 km/h – 19 l/100 km, maximum speed – 95 km/h. The car featured an original hood mask with a plastic radiator lining (due to the longer engine).
On the truck, the body was already almost rusty, the frame would also be nice to put in order, almost all the units were in a rather dubious condition, and yet the machine was not at the exhibition, but was a working device.
This is the state the ZIL was in at the time of purchase.
First of all, I had to get the engine in order.
Then they removed the body and started working on the frame.
It all started with a complete disassembly, the rear axle was completely removed for restoration. It was also decided to switch to Kamaz 10-stud Euro wheels with hubs that were purchased at disassembly. Due to the difference in the size of the wheel bearings of the existing reinforced ZIL-ovsky and Kamazovsky, it was decided to change the entire axle and install a regular 8-ton one from the base model 4331.
I installed new Kamaz brake pads, 10-stud Euro hubs took their long-awaited place with the brake drums, wide discs (J7.5) Well, we completed the rest of the small things, now the bridge was ready for installation.
Then, I started repairing the front end. There will be repair of tired components, as well as installation of euro hubs with brakes from Kamaz. Almost everything is the same as what was done in front. Everything was sorted out, cleaned, painted, worn parts were replaced, etc.
Also, the guy decided to replace the original 9-speed gearbox from ZiL with a gearbox from KamAZ with a divider, it will be more reliable and more maintainable, due to the shortage of spare parts for the Zilov gearbox, and even with the KamAZ gearbox, the speed will be an order of magnitude higher.
Then it was the turn of the cabin. It was removed and completely disassembled. All old paint and rust has been stripped down to bare metal for a quality paint job. The hood and doors suffered the same treatment, absolutely everything was cleaned down to bare metal. The radiator grille is fiberglass, it was sanded and kept clean. It was decided to buy new fiberglass wings and wheel arch liners.
Next we started priming. Using epoxy primer, which is much better in quality and protective properties than factory ones. After priming, all joints and seams were coated with polyurethane sealant, and the bottom was covered with rubber-bitumen mastic. The entire cabin and hood were brought into good shape, primed with acrylic for sanding and then painted in a non-standard color, but very beautiful, in the color “plum 478” according to the Lada catalog. Next is assembly and installation in place.
As a result, the guy completely repaired the ZIL with his own hands, the truck will serve the owner and feed the family. In addition to restoring all components and assemblies, the car was modified, even air conditioning was installed, which is a luxury for such a car. The result is the perfect truck for the job.
