Brake system of cars Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055

The Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 vehicles are equipped with a service brake system acting on all wheels, a parking brake system acting on the transmission and an auxiliary (engine) brake installed in the exhaust system.

Service brakes are designed to reduce the speed of a moving vehicle until it comes to a complete stop.

Service brakes Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 are drum-block. In the braked state, the pads are tightened by springs, as a result of which they are always pressed against the expansion fist through the rollers, and when braking, they are moved apart by the fist and pressed against the inner surface of the brake drum.

The parking brake system is designed to slow the car in place when stopping and parking.

Auxiliary (engine) brake Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 - throttle type, compression, exhaust with pneumatic drive. Designed to brake a vehicle when the engine is not running when the fuel supply is turned off.

The action of the brake is based on creating back pressure in the exhaust gas pipeline of the engine by blocking its flow area with a damper.

The drive of service brakes Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 is pneumatic, separate type. Compressed air is supplied to the brake chambers and, with the help of rods, adjusting levers and expansion knuckles, presses the brake pads against the drums with a force proportional to the pressure supplied to the brake chamber of compressed air.

Brake chambers are installed on the front axle, and pneumatic spring brake chambers are installed on the middle and rear axles.

When braking a Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 vehicle, compressed air from the brake valve section is supplied to the brake force regulator and, depending on the degree of vehicle load, the wheels of the rear bogie are braked with varying degrees of intensity.

The pneumatic equipment of the KrAZ-6510 vehicle is shown in Fig. 39, and the KrAZ-65101 vehicle - in Fig. 40.

On the left side under the cabin, three receivers 35 are installed on brackets: the top one is the consumer circuit receiver; middle — receiver of service brakes of the rear axle; lower - receiver of service brakes of the front and middle axles.

The pneumatic drive of the brake system of Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 has three receivers (Fig. 41) with a capacity of 40 liters each. Receivers are designed to create a supply of compressed air pumped by the compressor.

A condensate drain valve is installed on each receiver. To drain the condensate, lightly press the rod and move it in any direction.

Condensate is drained from the upper receiver using a wire rod.

Removal of receivers from the Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 vehicles should be carried out in the following sequence:

— disconnect all air ducts from the receivers;

— disconnect the wires from the pressure reduction sensors; disconnect the tubes to the two-pointer pressure gauge; unscrew nuts 26 from clamps 24; remove cotter pin 9 and remove pin 7;

— remove clamps 24, mark the location of the receivers (upper and lower);

Inspect the surface of the receivers Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055, clean the damaged surface, prime and paint the surface of the receivers with anti-corrosion paint. Damage to the thread is not allowed.

Assemble and install receivers on a car in the reverse order of disassembly.

The receivers of the service brake circuits of the driving axles Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 have leads to a two-pointer pressure gauge 9 located in the cockpit on the instrument panel. It serves for visual monitoring of the compressed air pressure in the service brake receivers.

All three receivers are equipped with emergency air pressure sensors 19, connected by electrical wires to warning lamps for signaling a drop in pressure.

When the pressure in the Kraz-6510, Kraz-65101, 65055 receivers drops below 0.45 MPa (4.5 kgf/cm2), the control lights on the instrument panel light up.

From compressor 13, through a moisture-oil separator with a pressure regulator 15 and an anti-freeze agent 41, compressed air, cleared of moisture and oil droplets, enters the receiver of the consumer circuit.

From the receiver of the consumer circuit through the four-circuit safety valve 47, air is supplied to the receivers of the service brake circuits.

The four-circuit safety valve stops the air supply and isolates from the others that of the circuits in which the air pressure sharply decreases due to a pipeline break or other malfunction.

From the receiver of the consumer circuit, compressed air is supplied to power the pneumatic cylinder of the clutch release drive and other consumers.

History of the creation of the KrAZ-260

The KrAZ-260 replaced the heavy all-terrain vehicle KrAZ-255B at the combat post of its older brother. August 8, 1967 is the start date of mass production. Production of the all-terrain vehicle continued until the end of 1994. People called him “laptyozhnik”, “lapotnik”. During this time, more than 82 thousand trucks rolled off the factory assembly line.

The main customer of the Kremenchug plant was the military sector. In addition, the vehicle was used in the national economy. The car transported various cargoes and people and was popular not only in the territory of the former USSR. Universal equipment was also purchased by foreign companies.

Frame and brake system


Rear and middle axle of KrAZ-260

The KrAZ-260 frame is formed by channel-modified spars located in the longitudinal direction. These elements are secured with bolts with stamped diameters.

The machine is equipped with a drum modification of the brake system. Each wheel has internal pads in its design. The system has a non-combined pneumatic drive. Its feature is as follows: the front and intermediate axles are connected to the lower section of the brake valve, and the rear axle is connected to the upper section of the brake assembly.


Brake valve KRAZ-260

The pneumatic system (P = 0.8 MPa) is combined and provides the ability to control trailer braking using a single-wire or two-wire mechanism.

The spare or parking braking system of equipment works due to the compression of the spring elements of pneumatic spring blocks, which affect the wheel mechanisms located on the intermediate and rear axles. This system is equipped with a pneumatic drive, which provides smooth braking of the equipment.

The machine is also equipped with an additional braking system, which is designed with the inclusion of a throttle mechanism. The compression mechanism is located in the exhaust gas removal unit. The trailer brakes are activated electrically.

Technical characteristics of KrAZ-260

The truck, new for that time, used a powerful engine and used technical innovations for its stable operation.

KrAZ-260 engine

In the engine compartment, plant engineers installed a YaMZ-238L turbocharged engine. Such a powerful power unit enabled the KrAZ-260 with a lifting capacity of 9500 kg to successfully cope with the assigned tasks.

The motor type is piston with a longitudinal arrangement at the front. The power of the 2-valve 8-cylinder power unit was 300 horsepower. The engine block was made of cast iron. The working volume of the power plant is within 14,860 cm³.

It must be emphasized that the truck was constantly operated in difficult and difficult conditions. In this regard, the plant’s design bureau applied a fundamentally new solution. Specialists added 2 dry-type air filters, using two-stage dirt cleaning and automatic dust removal. Engineers have changed the exhaust gas emission systems. We refused to install a muffler, using a pressure turbine.

Features of the KrAZ-260 transmission


Gearbox KrAZ-260

Due to the increased power of the equipment, the designers equipped the truck with a new type of gearbox - manual transmission 8. The dual-range manual gearbox with eight steps has synchronizers on each gear, but the reverse gear of the vehicle has a different device. The transmission design includes a main box consisting of four stages and an additional one formed by two stages.

The transfer case of the equipment is formed by three shafts, as well as two stages. It produces drive through an asymmetric differential to the front axle, which is the drive, and also to the rear axle bogie. The box also drives the winch. This unit uses a dry clutch on two discs.

Cabin of KrAZ-260: overview of the workplace

The car cabin has three seats, one of which is intended for the driver. The driver's seat is equipped with a sprung seat and is adjustable for rigidity, length, height and tilt.

The double seat was intended for passengers. The cabin is equipped with a heating system and blowing warm air onto the windshields.

To remove dirt and water from the windshield, an electric windshield wiper and washer was installed on the vehicle. There are two rear-view mirrors installed on the outside of the cab on the right and left sides. There was a ventilation system in the cabin. There is a headlight/finder mounted on the roof of the car. The package included a radio.

Modifications of KrAZ-260

The plant produced a number of modifications:

  • Truck tractor KrAZ-260 “B”.
  • KrAZ-260 “G” with an extended chassis.
  • KrAZ-260 “A” without an additional fuel tank.
  • KrAZ-260 "D".
  • Two versions of timber trucks: KrAZ-260 “L” and KrAZ-6437.

KrAZ-260 “V” truck tractor In the plant’s product line, the KrAZ-260 “V” truck tractor occupied a special place, being in demand among customers. The car with a shortened frame was equipped with a fifth-wheel coupling device. It could easily tow semi-trailers with a total weight of up to 27.5 tons when traveling on paved roads. On dirt roads, it was possible to tow a semi-trailer weighing up to 2300 kg.


This tractor was actively used in many sectors of the economy, used in the construction industry and agriculture. But the biggest customer was, of course, the military industry. Anti-aircraft missile systems and radar stations were installed on tractors.

KrAZ-260 “G” with an extended chassis. Pontoon cars were produced based on this model. The extended chassis was perfect for installing desalination stations and drilling rigs on the vehicle. The car was used as a fuel tanker. This is an incomplete list of the uses of the KrAZ-260 “G”.

And further. The plant also produced a prototype of the KrAZ-260 “L” timber truck, which was not put into mass production. It was replaced by the KrAZ-6437.

Cardan transmission KrAZ-260

This unit of equipment is formed by four driveshafts that connect the gearbox, transfer case and drive axles. For modifications of the machine, they are arranged in the same way and differ only in the dimensions and location of the associated parts. The drive shaft is solid and splined.

The KrAZ-260 cardan shaft is formed by a pipe system with a small wall thickness. On one side, the tubes are fastened with a hinge fork of a fixed location, on the other, they are connected to the splined part of the shaft, which is combined with a sliding fork. In addition to these elements, the design has a pair of hinges with needle-type bearings.

With a dynamically balanced shaft assembly, it has a rotation speed of 2100 rpm.

In addition to the main model of this vehicle, two more modifications were produced: the KrAZ-260A with a diesel engine and one fuel tank, and the KrAZ-260G with an extended chassis and increased payload capacity (10,000 kg). The last KrAZ-260 was produced in 1993.
