A little history for the legendary tractor

Soviet SIMIs trumpeted with all their might that the country would very soon see a new powerful tractor that would make a revolution. In agriculture. The factory workers referred to the equipment among themselves as “steppe hero.” The “hero” had something to be proud of even before foreign developments. Considering the first technical characteristics of the K-700 tractor, its length was about 7 meters, and the total weight of the “knight of the fields” reached a record 11 tons for the class of such machines in the USSR. Let us note that at that time there was a powerful tractor in the country, which after 20 years of production had become morally and physically obsolete, this is the DT-54 series, which had a tracked version, and the power was not too great. The development of steppe zones in Kazakhstan, the development of fields in the steppe zone of Kuban required the presence of completely different equipment, since the DT-54 could no longer cope with the task, and the technical characteristics of the K-700A tractor fully met the hopes of agricultural producers in the Soviet Union.

Let us add an interesting historical fact, which became the basis for the development of new tractor equipment. In 1959, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev was on a visit to the United States, where he visited the John Deere plant. The first secretary of the party became jealous that the Soviet DT-54 would not be able to surpass the American counterpart in power. Then a historic decision was made that the technical power characteristics of the K-700 tractor should surpass its American counterpart. In 3 years, they really managed to do the impossible, and in 1962 the technology saw the light of day in the USSR. To the credit of the developers, we can add that Americans and Western European manufacturers were only able to offer consumers something similar to the K-700 in the 90s of the 20th century. Thus, the Soviet agricultural producer managed to overtake the Americans by exactly 3 decades. At the same time, market competition forced production to be curtailed, and in 2004 the last type of special transport, the Kirovets K-700, rolled off the assembly line.

The intended purpose of the machine is agricultural work with mounted equipment, as well as with semi-mounted and trailed versions of additional auxiliary equipment of the wide-cut operating principle. The high-quality fuel consumption of the technical characteristics of the K-700 tractor made it possible to use the equipment for plowing and sufficiently deep loosening of the soil; for carrying out cultivation and discing stages; for harrowing and stubble peeling tasks; for sowing work, as well as for performing snow retention tasks. Additionally, the technical characteristics of the K-700 tractor engine made it possible to operate the equipment for reclamation work, earth-moving tasks, and in the construction and road industries.

As experience has come, quickly bead the wheels of the K-700

Autumn that year was surprisingly dry, so the cleaning was completed without undue hassle and on time. But you can’t fool the weather, it will still take its toll, and in October heavy rains began, which continued for a whole week. Continuing plowing was out of the question; the harvested fields no longer absorbed rainwater and the lowlands resembled small lakes. The foreman, in order to somehow occupy the machine operators who were left without work, sent some of the people to dismantle the harrows, and some of the younger ones to help the tractor driver with the K-700 change the worn tires on the wheels.

I must say that although we have worked as machine operators for several years, we all had to change tires on wheels, but not on such bulky ones as the one from Kirov. On MTZ or other wheeled tractors, this is done much easier. I drove back and forth a little on a flat tire and the tire cord itself lags behind the rim, and the inner diameter of the wheel is larger, there is something to grab onto with a pry bar in order to pick out the edge of the rim and pull out the tube.

If a tire went flat on a combine, they didn’t bother at all, they simply took it from decommissioned combines and installed it. Small front wheels from agricultural machines and tractor carts could be beaded quite easily, after all, the wheels are small and the tires are thinner. When we agreed to change the tires from the Kirov resident, we had no idea what awaited us. It must be said that the tractor driver who worked on this K-700 also did not have such experience. We decided to start with the rear wheel, so as not to crawl with a jack, but to lift the tractor with a hitch.

Having placed the tractor on a wooden block, we removed the wheel from the hub. There was a lot of space in the empty garage, we rolled the wheel to a free area and tried to use two-meter mountings to free the inner cord of the tire from the rim seat. Even the blows of a heavy sledgehammer did not help. Indeed, three healthy men, and we can’t cope with some kind of wheel. Some of us thought of trying to put pressure on the edge of the cord with a hitch from the MTZ-50, which was standing idle in the corner of the garage.

But this didn’t help either; I had to simultaneously push with a hitch and hit with a sledgehammer. Only after this was it finally possible to tear off the cord stuck to the rim. Then, using the usual technology, only with great effort, we pulled the rim out of the tire; we had to tinker with the tube for a long time; it fit the inner diameter of the rim very tightly. It turned out to be much easier to bead the new tire, since we had previously lubricated the edges of the cover with grease, but we had to install the tube by taking off our shoes and gradually pulling it into place with our feet.

By the end of the day, we still managed to cope with the wheel by swinging a sledgehammer and “stretching” our arms with long tire irons. The next day, as experienced tire fitters, the foreman again sent us to continue what we had started. We, taking into account the experience of the previous day, decided to first drive the K-700 with a flat tire, anyway, the cap is thrown away. Having driven around the garage in circles, we of course got all the dirt on all the wheels, but we managed to ensure that the tire itself came off the rim. And then it’s a matter of technology; on this day we managed not only to change the tires on one wheel, but also to dismantle another one.

This is what experience and dexterity mean, on the third day the Kirov resident was standing on new wheels, and the rain had subsided, soon you can go to the field again, plowing the remaining stubble. In general, there is only one conclusion: it is better to plow a shift in the field than to install new tires on the K-700.

Why do you need to know the weight of a tire?

Before installation, try to follow a simple rule - the lighter, the better. Large weight does not always indicate the reliability and wear resistance of rubber and often works at a loss. Thanks to modern technologies, it has been possible to produce lightweight rubber that wears out slowly and lasts a long time. This does not affect the alignment and stability of the machine in any way.

Tire weight is important to evaluate the following features:

  1. Fuel consumption – practice has shown that light tires save fuel. There is a widespread opinion among car enthusiasts: “a spare tire in the trunk plus half a liter of gasoline per 100 kilometers.” The judgment is not entirely correct, but if we are talking about large tractor wheels that weigh 70-100 kg, an extra 10-15% will save you fuel.
  2. Handling – with light tires it is easier to work on equipment. Despite the power steering, it is better to install lighter tires.
  3. Ease of installation – light rubber is easier to install on a tractor. With heavy tires you will spend a lot longer and will need several helpers.

POWERFUL!: Kirovets K-701 and K-700

Summer. Country house. My parents and grandparents are building a house/planting tomatoes/doing some other unknown crap around the house, but I have no time for that. The rest of the boys and I, like those spotters, seize the moment. The moment when, whistling with a turbine and emitting flakes of soot, a Kirovets emerges from the forest carrying crushed stone or manure or who knows what to someone else’s site. Or maybe he came to pull out some particularly gifted summer resident on a penny, or even better, a MAZ with a semi-trailer sitting on the bridges carrying concrete blocks for a rich construction site, this is entertainment for the whole day. - Uncle, give me a ride?! And now you’re already shaking off-road in the cabin, all around is the smell of diesel fuel, exhaust gases, a little smell of vodka from the tractor driver, roar, in a word - POWER! But aside from the lyrics, as it became known just the other day, the SSM artel is launching into production the Kirovets K-701A model or, which generally makes no difference to the collector due to the external identity of the prototype, K-701. In connection with this event, I decided to show the public the K-701 model I have from Minigrad, and in the company of the old K-700, the same class=”aligncenter” width=”1024″ height=”576″[/img] I won’t describe the performance characteristics of various modifications, everything is perfectly googleable, and in the blue place there is a huge topic with more than a hundred pages dedicated to Kirov. Let's just look at the model itself, but in my opinion there is a lot to look at.

The matching of the paint color, as far as my memory serves me, is quite accurate. The quality of the painting of this specimen, despite the fact that it is a handicraft production, is quite at the level. An obvious disadvantage of the model, compared to the SSM product, is the painted wipers. By the way, the hood opens, but once it is opened, due to the “thoughtful mechanism,” it is very problematic to close it back without cracks, this is clearly visible in the next frame. I won’t open it again, you won’t wait. The suspension is fully suspension, the wheels rotate. Rubber - Kharkov workshop. The joint of the halves is worked out, the hydraulic cylinders are functioning. Donyshko. The main difference in the suspension between the K-700 and K-700A/701 is visible, namely the absence of springs on the front bogie in the latter. The cockpit features levers, a pair of seats and an implausible instrument panel with no arrows on the dials. Apparently this is another minus. By the way, all the headlights are made of some kind of crystals. Looks very impressive on the shelf. The model is made of metal, the weight is significant, when you hold it in your hands, you feel the POWER of the thing. Well, it’s come to the K-700. The color match here is also very good. As far as I remember them, this is exactly the “thick” yellow color that I encountered. At the back there is a fully working additional fastening mechanism. equipment. If you wish, you can order some kind of plow and put it on the tractor. In general, the rear of the model is well made. Working hydraulic cylinders, emulation of a hydraulic drive, they even hung a chain, but the brake lights are painted. Despite the color, the paint job on the model itself is not very successful. Moreover, when I received it (in a shoe box, almost like a Cheburashka), my fingers stuck to the paint. Only by miracle did we manage to avoid the appearance of fingerprints. Donyshko. Front springs are in place. We load up for the trip back to the shelf. Brother is lucky brother. Minigrad and Kirovets tags are missing

Device

"Kirovets K 701" is based on two movable semi-frames. This made it possible to increase the cross-country ability and maneuverability of the tractor. The main structural components, such as the cabin, engine, tanks for fuel and lubricants and gearbox, are mounted on the front half-frame. The drive axle and attachments are installed in the rear segment of the machine. Installing special tires on the wheels made it possible to replace the tractor's spring elements. The unit has a manual gearbox that allows you to change speeds on the go.

Cabin

The cabin on the K-701 is installed on four rubber shock absorbers, double, glazed, sealed and frameless, ventilation and heating are provided. Tightness is ensured by installing bushings and covers in those places where parts and control drives pass through cutouts in the floor and walls of the cabin. The tightness of roof and floor hatches, door and window openings is achieved using sealing rubber bands. Installing special panels on the walls of the cabin, lining the roof and applying mastic to the floor provides sound insulation and insulation. In bad weather, good visibility is ensured by three windshield wipers. The windshield and rear windows do not open; the door windows are equipped with power windows. The driver's seat is sprung, adjustable, and has three positions. These tractors have the ability to reverse control; for this, the seat can be moved from the rear wall to the front, and the gas and brake pedals on the left can be moved back.

When operating the machine in the summer, remove the dust separator fan from the heater casing and place it on the roof of the cab, and also disconnect the heating radiator from the engine cooling system.

Equipment

The standard Kirovets kit includes a loading bucket and a dozer blade. Additionally, the machine can be equipped with the following types of working parts:

  • plow;
  • jaw grip;
  • hydraulic hammer;
  • cutters;
  • cultivator;
  • seeder;
  • towing device.

At the customer's request, the tractor can be equipped with additional tires, a heating system for fuels and lubricants, an air conditioner and a heating device.
