Appearance

Compared to its predecessor, the appearance of the TGX has changed noticeably. The main changes affected the cabin, the aerodynamics of which have noticeably improved. The bumper and front panels have taken on a new shape, and the mirror housings have become streamlined. Now air intakes are hidden in the bumper, which have also increased their area. The black fiberglass panel underlines the aggressive appearance of the MAN TGX.

Lighting technology has also undergone changes. According to the designers, the lamps have become more durable, and the parking lights now have a daylight option. The Germans developed a spoiler especially for this model. The roof and sunroof now slide out, and the windshield and side windows provide decent visibility.

Paint and corrosion protection

Is the cabin painted well? The owners say that the quality of the paintwork here is at a good level. There are no chips after 500-800 thousand kilometers. But the headlights sweat, and this is a minus. Does MAN rust? Most of the elements in the tractor (this is the bumper, running boards, part of the doors, spoiler) are made of plastic. Therefore, there is nothing to rust here. Instances that have traveled more than a million kilometers do not have the slightest hint of rust. In this regard, the Germans deserve respect. The only drawback is the side spoiler mounting loops, which move away from the right side. The loops will turn sour over time. And if there is a need to hook or unhook a trailer, it is difficult to move this spoiler to the side.

Cabin

MAN offers three types of cab configurations for the TGX tractor: XL, XLX and XXL. Each option is uniquely suited for specific transportation purposes.

Cabin XL

Despite the fact that this is the most compact option, the equipment provides the driver with the necessary comfort. By the way, compactness does not prevent the cabin from remaining spacious. There is a very comfortable bed built in, which is easy to access. This version is perfect for short-term transportation at the regional level.

Cab XLX

Enlarged version from XL. This cabin has enough height for you to stand tall. The interior is pleasantly pleasing and, due to the comfortable environment, allows you to be in the cabin without straining, even when traveling long distances. There are convenient drawers and shelves for various kinds of things. Just like in the previous version, there is a bed, but here, if desired, you can order a second one.

Cabin XXL

The name itself already tells us a lot. Of the three, it is the largest and most spacious. Moreover, it is the largest of all available in Europe. Two things that I would like to note in the interior of the car are huge space and indescribable comfort.

For example, modifications for long-distance flights XXL have an internal height of about two meters, thanks to which the driver can stand up to his full height. There are also plenty of luggage compartments and shelves here - fold and store anything. There is an additional sleeping shelf - by the way, made in the shape of a hammock.

Such data allows you to feel as comfortable as possible. And the cabin undoubtedly meets the requirements for international flights. And here’s the proof: the driver’s seat has been perfected. And not in vain, because the person sitting on it will have to spend more than one hour on the road.

Adjustments allow you to adjust the chair to the needs of the rider: height, different inclinations and adjustment of the seat shock absorbers. Optionally, you can order a heated seat, pneumatic lumbar support, a function for adjusting the side contour of the seat and shoulder area, hydraulic shock absorbers and seat depth adjustment.

Moreover, the seat is equipped with climate control. Yes Yes! Temperature-controlled air is supplied directly to the driver's seat. The passenger seat is a little less functional, but it can acquire a resting position.

Of course, we didn’t forget about the seat belts that are in all seats. All adjustment operations are hassle-free and easy to learn. These chairs are upholstered in leather or black velor.

The cabin itself also has climate control. And it can be upgraded with the following options: autonomous, water and gas heaters, respectively, equipped with a thermostat; parking climate control controls the temperature even when the engine is off.

The feeling of being in a premium cabin is also enhanced by the quality of the materials from which the interior is made. In general, everything that can be seen inside demonstrates German pedantry and the desire for perfection. In addition, Man's cabins clearly demonstrate how clearly ergonomics can be combined with aesthetics.

The noise level in the cabin was reduced by 25-30 percent. The design of the steering wheel has changed significantly, allowing it to be adjusted for reach and angle, while the dashboard is not much different from the previous MAN. In front of the driver, it opens up a panel in two colors.

The information sensors located on it are hidden under anti-reflective glass and provide the necessary information about the operation of all systems operating on board. The location of monitors, buttons, switches and other controls is as practical as possible and has the easiest access to them. Using the on-board computer, you can easily obtain various information about the condition of the tractor or the load distribution of the trailer.

Multimedia system

The MAN Media Truck (MMT) Advanced multimedia system allows you to use a number of practical functions: viewing traffic news; Thanks to audio support, the driver can enjoy music while driving using the audio system. The Traffic Message Channel (TMC) traffic information channel is also integrated here.

Among other things, the MMT can be supplemented with options, namely: a navigation system, a module for hands-free calls, Bluetooth and an advanced audio system with a subwoofer on board. A special addition is the control of the tractor using an infrared remote control. Additionally, a telephone is built into the multimedia system.

And of course, Russian-speaking drivers can rest assured - the system has a Russian language for the interface. In addition to the main sensors, it consists of an audio system and a display menu. And the MAN TGX has acquired a couple of interesting technological innovations. For example, radar sensors that monitor the dimensions of a car on sharp turns. There are so many electronics that it will take more than one week to get used to it.

Driver's seat

The seat in the MAN is air suspended. Can be adjusted in height, rigidity, and also in the level of backrest tilt. Additionally, two armrests are provided. By the way, the seat belt is integrated directly into the backrest. It is very convenient to reach for it. And if the driver forgot to buckle up, a sound indicator will tell him about it. But this is not always convenient. When approaching a loading or unloading point and after receiving documents (when you need to leave the salon), this system will beep wildly as soon as the car moves more than five kilometers per hour. But constantly wearing a seat belt during this period is not an option.

Engine

A distinctive feature of all MAN TGX trucks is the presence of diesel engines with a volume of 10.5 or 12.4 liters. The power can vary from 360 to 440 horses in the first case, and 480-540 hp. in the second. However, this is not the limit - there are models that were equipped with an eight-cylinder V-engine with a volume of 16.2 liters and a power of 680 hp.

The transmission that was installed on such cars could be 16-speed or 12-speed (manual and automatic, respectively). The reliable braking system was electronically controlled. With proper adjustment of the adaptive cruise control, it was possible to automatically adjust the speed of the MAN TGX depending on how close the oncoming vehicle is.

The special ESP stability control system minimizes the risk of rollover and allows you to better cope with skidding. In 2012, MAN TGX truck tractors underwent a number of changes.

In particular, fuel injection was modified and new filter elements appeared. Engineers have brought the MAN engine to the latest environmental level, and fuel consumption has decreased significantly.

Transmission

For more advanced gear shifting, such tractors are equipped with an offroad type transmission. This allows you to maintain maximum dynamics even when fully loaded. The ZF manual transmission in the MAN TGX has 16 speeds and is equipped with a MAN Comfort Shift® hydraulic drive and Servo Shift® shift system.

The choice of top gear is either accelerating or direct. The automated ZF MAN TipTronic® gearbox system operates within a twelve-speed range. The presence of such a box allows you to reduce fuel consumption. The hybrid version of the MAN TipMatic® transmission also contributes to lower consumption.

Since the system can switch from auto to manual mode, it will be easier for the driver to predict the best moment to change gear. The mode control lever is installed under the steering wheel. An EVB motor retarder can be ordered as an option for the box.

This mechanism will itself include the most optimal stage in the gearbox. Such an assistant will give the driver more opportunity to concentrate on the process of driving and monitoring the situation on the road. In addition to the obvious improvement in safety, this further reduces the required fuel consumption.

The advantages of such transmissions compared to their predecessors are that, first of all, they reduce fuel consumption, and secondly, their maintenance, including replacement of parts, has become much cheaper. Newly adjusted hypoid axles with a gear ratio of 2.85 add to the economy effect.

To improve traction, TGX models are equipped with a PriTarder® engine brake, optionally complemented by HydroDrive® hydrostatic front axle drive. Accordingly, this helps the tractor in cross-country ability.

Brake system

A fairly reliable system with EBS and an optionally equipped ESP system protects not only the driver, but also increases the reliability of the entire machine and the cargo being transported. Braking as soft as starting is possible thanks to ventilated discs and a dual-circuit pneumatic system controlled by electronic devices using auxiliary braking.

Such devices not only make the braking distance quiet, but also reduce it to a minimum. Durability, safety and wear resistance are improved by the automatic brake retarder. The MAN BrakeMatic® option helps maintain a stable speed when driving downhill.

The manufacturer guarantees that the bearings and ventilated discs will not require lubrication during operation since all axles are equipped with a lubrication system, and this is another plus for the maintenance of the tractor. And the presence of hub units allows you to reduce costs and time for replacing discs.

Suspension issue

The German MAN TGX has a good choice between suspension options: fully spring (leaf springs), combined: spring (leaf) / pneumatic or fully pneumatic.

  • The pure spring suspension is distinguished by excellent strength and lightness, which allows for maximum lateral and directional stability. In addition to springs, shock absorbers and stabilizers, tuned specifically for the TGX series, work here.
  • The ECAS system allows you to control the suspension using electrical devices. The essence of its work is that the size of the ground clearance can be adjusted based on the load level. Using a simple control system, the frame can be lowered by -90mm and raised by +190mm from the standard ground clearance. You can save two settings in the on-board computer to adjust the car level.
  • One of the most advanced car designs is a fully air-suspension front axle. The air spring and shock absorber work in an LDS system with significant suspension travel. This suspension ensures a confident ride and stability even with an increased center of gravity. And for a moment this is another plus for the safety of the MAN TGX.

Safety

Most of the equipment in the MAN TGX says just that – “safety first.” Therefore, as you may have noticed, there are quite a few safety systems in this car. Accordingly, any type of accident carries with it subsequent consequences, which in any case require the expenditure of money, time and other resources. All this complicates and may even jeopardize both the transportation of cargo and those involved in incidents. MAN BrakeMatic® electronic brake control system. As mentioned earlier, this system allows you to reduce braking distance to a minimum. Moreover, it maximally synchronizes the operation of all brakes, both the tractor and the trailer. The system also promotes uniform wear of all parts responsible for braking.

Lane Keeping System (LGS). Here the sensors monitor the deviation from the current lane. By monitoring road markings, they remind the driver if he begins to change lanes without turning on the turn signal.

Active roll stabilization CDC (Continuous Damping Control). This prevents the car from tipping over along with its cargo. By controlling the rigidity of the CDC shock absorbers, the roll angle of the entire train is minimized. This will be useful when changing lanes, turning and braking.

ACC adaptive cruise control system. Having such a system on board reduces the risk of collision between vehicles moving behind each other. ACC determines the distance between the MAN TGX and another vehicle using sensors and calculates the optimal driving speed.

Emergency braking assistance system. Simply put, the faster and harder you press the pedal, the faster the train will get into place. The system pumps additional pressure into the system when necessary and controls its level in other situations.

Tire pressure monitoring system TPM. In addition to safety, this system also improves engine economy. After all, it’s no secret that optimal tire pressure contributes to better vehicle performance, reducing the chance of skidding and increasing tire service life.

Motors

MAN produces engines for its trucks in Nuremberg. The modern line for medium- and heavy-duty trucks includes in-line four- and six-cylinder units with displacements from 4.6 to 15.2 liters. In the general designation system for MAN engines of all types, the first two digits are the cylinder diameter in millimeters without the first sign, the third digit is the piston stroke (2 or 3 - 125 mm; 4 - 142 mm, 5 - 150 mm, 6 - 155 mm, 7 - 166 or 170 mm), the last, fourth digit is the number of cylinders (for 10-cylinder engines - 0, for 12-cylinder engines - 2).

In conclusion, I would like to note all the advantages and disadvantages of the European tractor. Among the advantages are a fairly heavy fuel tank, low noise levels inside the cabin, a solid interior, a spacious cabin, a high-torque engine and improved aerodynamics. But there are also disadvantages - for example, the gear lever is not very convenient for short drivers, and the sliding spoiler.

Man TGX Euro 6 is equipped with a 16-speed manual transmission. The gearbox for these trucks is manufactured by ZF. The transmission is equipped with a CommonShift hydraulic drive.
