The instrument panel and the overall interior have changed so much that, if you abstract from the outer shell, it will be difficult to recognize the previous groove. The story about this bus hung for two long years. Then the bus with a short overhang was called PAZ-320408 (according to the VIN code PAZ-31032H), and its fate was in great doubt - even the Pavlovsk residents could not really say whether this version would go on stream or remain in a single copy. Life has put everything in its place.
Meet PAZ-320302. Several dozen similar machines have already been produced. The main reason for the appearance of the shortened version lies, oddly enough, under the hood of the bus. After all, this is where the archaic low-power ZMZ gasoline engine is located. It would seem why, but... demand creates supply. Paradoxical as it may seem, some transport workers order just such cars. These are mainly those who previously worked with gasoline PAZ-3205. It is interesting to note that, at the request of the customer, buses leave the factory with a body prepared for the installation of gas equipment operating on both liquefied gas (propane-butane) and compressed gas (methane). In general, the plant positions the PAZ-3203 with a gasoline engine as a bus for regions with low incomes and low fares.

PAZ-3204 is a new model designed to replace the veteran PAZ-3205 on the assembly line. First shown in 2006. It is a bus similar in size to the PAZ-3205, but with modern finishing and a comfortable interior. Small-scale production began in 2007. The first version with air suspension had problems with the reliability of the design and remained not very widespread. In total, about 700 copies were produced.
In March 2009, PAZ modernized model 3204. The design of the bus was somewhat simplified. From then on, it began to be designated PAZ-320402-03, the air suspension gave way to a spring one, the bus underwent a facelift - it received new headlights and the usual windows with rubber bands instead of the modern glued ones. In addition, the front passenger door was moved closer to the front axle of the bus, and the floor level was raised. The bus began to be produced with several interior layout options:

The intercity version of the PAZ-320412, bearing the name “Vector” on its sides, is identical in innovations to the described PAZ-320402. However, as befits the flagship of the line, there are still differences.
The main thing is, of course, the salon. Comfortable reclining seats are equipped with two-point seat belts. All of them stand simply on the floor, without any podiums, thereby facilitating the process of moving around the cabin. The lack of individual lighting units is compensated by a fairly bright general light located in the luggage racks, and during the day additional light penetrates through the transparent emergency hatches in the roof of the bus. Instead of personal air ducts, an air conditioner is installed in the center of the cabin. Proper placement allows air to be distributed throughout the cabin, preventing icy jets from reaching the heads of passengers. The air conditioning control panel fits perfectly above the driver's head. Of course, the bus, designed for intercity transportation, is equipped with a video system in the ceiling ledge above the windshield and luggage compartment. The latter is made exactly so that, if necessary, you can throw a couple of large bags into it, but at the same time it does not take up space from the interior.
And of course the Cummins engine. So far this is the most popular brand of engines among Russian (and not only) bus manufacturers. I think the choice of this power plant for an intercity car was not made by chance. On long routes, professionals have always valued reliability above immediate benefits.

From the driver's point of view, the PAZ-320402 has not changed much. And why would it be, if in December 2009 we already tested a similar car with a YaMZ engine. In terms of driving sensations, the impressions are the same as two years ago. Everything is fine: vibrations and noise are within reasonable limits, controllability too, and maneuverability has not changed one bit.

But the psychological component is different. The cabin has become more comfortable. Reading instrument readings from the new panel is now easier. In addition, it is more convenient to work with buttons. Now they do not spread horizontally, but are turned towards the driver. It would also be really cool to make the sound accompanying the turn signal activation less pronounced. I also appreciate the transfer of the handbrake handle behind the gearbox shift lever - now removing the handbrake and engaging the gear is carried out in one motion. Very comfortably. The knob of the gearbox lever itself has also become more pleasant; it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, rather than sticking into it.

The only pity is that the change in the contours of the hood and front panel turned out to be twofold. On the one hand, the interior has become more modern, and on the other, all recesses and recesses have disappeared from the surface. Now where to put the change, install the cash register and just put the cap? This question remains unanswered for now. However, there are much more positive aspects of the new design than controversial issues.
But the sensations from the pre-restyling short-wheelbase PAZ-320302 are already less pleasant. Due to its shorter length, the bus became more nimble and prone to trajectory changes. But, you must admit, if the driver is “headlong”, he simply will not create borderline situations.
The old panel was good too
There have also been changes in the filling of the gasoline car. Finally, the unsynchronized 4-speed gearbox is a thing of the past, communication with which was like “hello from the 70s,” and not the most pleasant one. Since June 2011, the PAZ-320302-08 has been equipped with a synchronized 5-speed gearbox GAZ-3307-1700010-20. Now the content is much more consistent with the nice cover.

However, even now it cannot be said that work on the updated family has already been completed - it has not happened at all. When simulating scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, the fact that the spare wheel on the PAZ-320402 is difficult to access was noted: it is fixed in the center of the axle in the rear overhang, and in order to lower it, the driver will have to crawl under the bus. But avoiding this unpleasant procedure is quite simple - you just need to make a hole for the knob in the rear bumper, or even better, just move the wheel to the left side, in place of the current compartment with an autonomous heater. Moreover, there is plenty of space to carry the latter. This will, firstly, improve the weight distribution of a loaded bus; compensating for the weight of passengers crowding on the step at the doors will definitely not be superfluous, and secondly, it will simplify the task of replacing a flat tire. After all, they moved the spare tire to the PAZ-320412 “Vector” from the rear overhang to the starboard side in front of the rear axle - both convenient and safe.
Replacing light bulbs in the headlights is unreasonably difficult - it seems you can’t do it without wrenches. And it’s worth thinking about mounting the generator on the YaMZ engine - its current placement is simply unacceptable. However, it is worth noting that there are no issues with access to Cummins attachments. So the work is underway, and that's the main thing.
