The new vehicles are designed to become universal carriers for flights both on paved roads and off-road. It is appropriate to remember that heavy trucks of the Kerax series have been produced at the Spanish plant in Villaverde since 1997. A cabin from Premium Distribution is installed on a specially created chassis, providing the driver with high comfort.

The chassis was originally developed for the construction version and was never a modernization of any road version - this is one of the most important advantages of Renault Trucks construction vehicles. The Premium family started in 1996 and is assembled at a modern French plant in Bourg-en-Brasse. Production of the freshly baked Premium Lander started there on January 12, 2004, and on January 21, official deliveries of these machines to the markets of European countries began. The expansion of the Renault Trucks model range is not a whim of the French company’s marketers, but a response to the current needs of the European market.

However, it came at a time when the Old World is on the verge of a crisis of overproduction of heavy-duty vehicles. Despite all the attractiveness of the new product, its creators were very careful when calculating annual production volumes. The fact is that, according to experts, the European market is ready to annually consume about 9,500 units of such equipment of all brands. At the same time, the largest orders will come from France and Germany - just over 2 thousand and 1.9 thousand, Great Britain and Italy - about 1.1 thousand and up to 1 thousand, respectively. The Russian market is still able to “digest” about two hundred such machines a year.

Since the competition is tight, performance comes first. That's why French automakers compared the Premium Lander with classmates from other manufacturers, namely: MAN TG-A 18.310, Mercedes-Benz Atego, IVECO Eurocargo, DAF CF75, Volvo FM9/FM12, Scania P114/P124. As a result, they came to the conclusion that their new truck has a number of design advantages over its competitors - the lowest weight in its class, the best ground clearance, increased front axle load, reinforced chassis frame, which makes it ideal for use in Russia and other countries CIS. It is perhaps too early to talk about comparing operational parameters - this can be done based on experience of practical use in real conditions.

Experts conceived the Premium Lander not as a single model, but as a whole range of vehicles to solve various transport problems. In accordance with their purpose, the new Renaults are based on the Premium Distribution truck chassis for local and regional transport and the Premium Long Distance chassis for long-haul transport. The developers claim that Premium Lander is a good compromise for transport companies concerned with the problem of optimizing their fleet. On the one hand, the new truck provides greater performance on asphalt roads than the construction Kerax.

On the other hand, it has higher cross-country ability and efficiency on unpaved roads compared to the Premium highway. The head of the Marketing Construction division, Boris Joseph, says, not without pride, that the Premium Lander is a synthesis of the spirit of versatility that reigns in their company and has become a vehicle that fully meets the professional requirements of European clients. According to the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the French company, Mr. Stefano Shmelevsky, versatility implies the machine’s ability to make transportation cost-effective in solving any problem, be it transporting concrete or asphalt, building materials or construction equipment, agricultural products or industrial waste.

How is it achieved? First of all, due to the variety of modifications. There are three main configurations for Premium Lander: truck chassis with 4x2 and 6x2 wheel arrangements, as well as truck tractors with 4x2 wheel arrangement. A 4x2 truck chassis with a crane at the rear can be used for the distribution and delivery of building materials, and a 4x2 tractor with a dump semi-trailer is suitable for transporting materials to objects under construction and reconstruction. For collecting recyclable materials and waste, 4x2 and 6x2 truck chassis with a grab and a dump body are optimal. And for agricultural work, transportation of feed, animals and milk tanks, it is advisable to use a 6x2 cargo chassis with a removable container.

There are three cabin versions to choose from: short with a depth of 1.6 m; long (2 m.) and deep (2.2 m.). Based on the purpose of the new truck, a line of power units was also selected for it. 11-liter diesel engines with a power of 320 are installed on 6x2 chassis and 4x2 tractors; 370 and 420 horsepower. For a chassis with a 4x2 wheel arrangement, in addition to those listed, there is also a 6-liter engine with an output of 270 horsepower. Along with a manual transmission for engines with a displacement of 11 liters. An automatic transmission is also provided.

However, for a universal truck such a set of advantages would not be enough. After all, after tens and hundreds of kilometers of driving on the highway, he should feel at ease even on the last hundreds of meters of dirt roads or complete off-road conditions on construction sites. It was these last meters off the asphalt that dictated the increase in ground clearance. Now the figure is 529 mm. under the front bumper is the best among analogues of other brands produced on the European market. On average, the increase in ground clearance was 129 mm.

Engineers have prudently strengthened the design of the Premium Lander. For example, the frame was strengthened with longitudinal side members 290 mm high. The front axle in the standard version was prepared for a payload of 8 tons, the rear axle - up to 13 tons. The rear axle was equipped with double wheel reduction gears and a differential lock. Construction profile tires of size 13 R22.5 were included as standard. The basic version includes a reverse gear horn, steel fuel tank, power take-off and rear window for day and mid cabs. However, Premium Lander was created based on reasonable minimalism, which in Russian conditions is more relevant than anywhere else. And to emphasize this, the French even introduced a new light gray color for the instrument panel and front panel, as well as refreshed textile colors on the door panels and seats.
