Technical characteristics of KamAZ vehicles

KamAZ trucks are equipped with a frame chassis with a cab mounted above the engine. The vehicles are equipped with Russian power units from KamAZ and YaMZ plants, as well as imported engines (for example, Cummins or Daimler, corresponding to Euro-5).

Engine

The engine installed in the KamAZ-4308 model was developed specifically for it. A medium-tonnage truck could have appeared back in the 90s, but at that moment Kama Auto used technologies developed in the Soviet years. The GAZelles received a power plant from the Volga, and the ZIL Bychki received MAZ engines. The Kama Automobile Plant simply did not have a unit suitable for a medium-tonnage truck.

Since 2006, KamAZ-4308 has received a new 6-cylinder engine produced at the Cummins Kama plant. The Cummins ISBe engine complied with the Euro-5 standard and had an electronically controlled Common Rail fuel system. again, the thickness of the cylinder walls was increased, which helped with repairs. The bottom of the pan and the cylinder block were covered with a steel tile, reducing noise levels and adding rigidity. The drive of the compressor, water pump and generator fan received force through a poly-V-belt with an auto-tensioner. The fan was located on the front toe of the crankshaft. The viscous fan clutch ensured quick warm-up of the engine.

The main drawback of the Cummins ISBe power plant was the regular breakdown of starters. But the problem was soon fixed.

The modern KamAZ 43255 is based on a classic platform with a 4 by 2 wheel arrangement and leaf spring suspension in the front and rear.
