Today we are exploring a heavy truck tractor model KAMAZ-65806-002-68 6x4 (K3342). The vehicle, which received the index 65806-002-68, does not belong to the line of budget transport solutions and, according to the manufacturer, should compete with similar European trucks. In the trade designation of the test car, the ornament “K 3342” shines on the cab door. This is similar to the Daimler AG concern, where the first two digits indicate the total weight of the vehicle, and the next pair indicate the rounded engine power (hp). The letters in front of the marking numbers in the new family determine the purpose of the trucks: M – long-distance vehicle group, K – heavy or all-wheel drive group, T – promising and other vehicles.

KAMAZ, which does not get bored at the car depot

We recently described an interesting truck tractor from the Kama Automobile Plant KAMAZ-54909-090-B5 (M1840) with plug-in hydrostatic front-wheel drive, which briefly turns a 4x2 vehicle into a 4x4. This solution is designed to overcome temporary off-road conditions or snowy and icy areas. A road train with such a tractor is in demand for high-speed transportation of construction goods on public roads. But the construction industry also needs road trains that can constantly work on industrial roads with heavy semi-trailers weighing more than 60 tons. At the same time, the transportation distance often does not exceed 300–500 km, which makes it possible to get by with a compact day cab or with one berth.

The wheel arrangement of truck tractors for such work is usually 6x4, a little less often - 6x6. What is remarkable about KAMAZ-65806-002-68 6x4, what is its unusual design? I’ll answer right away: nothing. This is a completely trivial solution for assembling a construction truck tractor. Such cars are offered by all, without exception, members of the Big Seven. Even if they have an original “filling”, with their own vision of technical solutions, Japanese and Korean trucks perform quite successfully in this niche. But KAMAZ-65806-002-68 6x4 is noticeably cheaper than its European and Asian competitors, and at the same time it has in its guts reputable components and assemblies from famous European suppliers. Looking ahead a little, I admit that this fact of borrowing crankcases and bodies with venerable nameplates does not yet turn the Chelny tractor into an absolute analogue of its European competitors, but a sluggish trend is felt.

Peculiarities

Many owners note a significantly increased level of comfort, closer to European counterparts. It has become much quieter inside, and vibrations during operation are almost imperceptible.

The high seating position and large glass area made it possible to achieve excellent visibility from the driver's workplace. The number of blind spots has been reduced due to large rear-view mirrors and a front additional one installed above the windshield on the right side.

The engines have high power and excellent traction. You can get moving with an empty truck even in third gear. It is worth noting that the car’s transmission is designed in such a way that the greatest power and torque are present in the first two gears. Thanks to this, the car can transport impressive amounts of cargo without much difficulty. In addition, imported gearboxes are convenient. There is no need to make any effort to engage the required gear.

The cross-country ability of the KamAZ-6580 model is quite decent. The transmission includes lockable center and cross-axle differentials, allowing the truck to overcome muddy mud and deep snow.

The frame structure received additional reinforcements. Due to this, the dump truck can withstand a load not only within its carrying capacity (and it has an impressive load), but also above it. But it is not recommended to operate it with overload.

The presence of a large number of different superstructures allows this vehicle to be used not only in quarries and construction sites, but also in many other areas where high performance characteristics are required from the equipment.

Diversity from America, Europe and Asia

Starting this year, the new KAMAZ family is now equipped with an even greater number of engine options. The first pre-production samples were equipped with Cummins ISL series engines with a displacement of 6.7 or 8.9 liters. Then a more powerful 12-liter Cummins ISG12E5 of the fifth environmental class appeared. This motor comes from China, but the ISG12 series, which represents the new global Heavy-Duty platform, was developed in the USA. And from 2022, you can purchase a car with a Russian deeply modernized KAMAZ-740 engine of the fifth environmental class, and, finally, with a German Daimler engine, as on our today’s construction truck tractor.

Model OM457LA.V/4, Euro 5, power 428 hp. at 1900 rpm, maximum torque – 2100 at 1100 rpm. This is an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 11.97 liters. The range of these motors supplied to our market includes power settings of 315 kW (428 hp) or 295 kW (401 hp). All these power units are inherited from the Mercedes-Benz Axor. The motor has a Telligent engine management system with injection pressure up to 2300 bar. The engine design is typical of the Daimler AG concern: separate cylinder heads, timing drive on the flywheel side, four valves per cylinder. Let's move on to the transmission.

The ZF 16S2220 16-speed manual gearbox is designed to operate with torque up to 2200 Nm. The engine in our case has a maximum torque of 2100 Nm, so there is even a small technical reserve of a hundred or so newtons. The gearbox lever is driven by a telescopic rod; the transition from the lower to the upper range is carried out by moving the lever in the transverse direction in the horizontal plane, the so-called “slap”.

KAMAZ-65209-S5 NEO for lean retail (photos, technical specifications)

An advanced strategy for the development of the NEO line allowed the company to offer cargo carriers fresh solutions that meet modern requirements. One of the concern's new products, KAMAZ-65209-S5 with a lifting rear axle and a 6x2-2 wheel arrangement, was launched into production quite recently. The machine is an advanced format that allows you to reduce the cost of transportation by saving fuel and consumption of operating materials.

The 6520 model range has been finalized. In addition to the “classic” KAMAZ vehicles, starting with model 6520 and ending with 65204 (6x4, 6x6, 8x4), this included the newest family of truck tractors (65206) and chassis (65207) with a 6x4 wheel arrangement. In 2017, the company presented the KAMAZ-65208 for retail with the 6x2-2 formula, and now it’s the turn of the tractor.

A distinctive feature of Kama trucks: balanced ideas and undeniable engineering solutions. A seemingly ordinary three-axle tractor from Naberezhnye Chelny has already managed to win the prize of choice among journalists and cargo carriers in 2022 at commercial transport exhibitions. The combination of four factors gives it an invaluable advantage in the market. This is a new comfortable cabin of the K4 generation, a powerful 400-horsepower Euro 5 engine, an automated transmission and a “sloth” - a lifting axle, for which everything was conceived!

Frame for heavy road train

According to the specification, a road train with a locomotive in the form of the subject of today's conversation named KAMAZ-65806-002-68 6x4 can weigh up to 74,350 kg, of course, if you do not leave the boundaries of technological ramps. The frame of our truck tractor is of KAMAZ's own production, made of high-strength steel grade 600 MS. The frame is reinforced with a liner. The thickness of the frame is 8 mm, the amplifier insert is also 8 mm. All necessary brackets and attachments are secured using high-strength bolts.

The front part of the left side member is used to mount a bracket that combines the fastening of the front springs and the cab. Power steering is installed on it. These integral brackets reduce weakening and twisting of the side members at this location. It is understood that the total weight of the semi-trailer can reach 64 tons. To solve this problem, a fifth wheel coupling with two degrees of freedom of the Orlandi F2TG40 brand was selected. The diameter of the coupling pin is 50.8 mm (2 inches), the height of the hitch is 1310–1340 mm at the full weight of the road train. The SSU can be moved forward by a distance of up to 300 mm in increments of 50 mm.

Market segment

At the end of the 30s, ZIS engineers finally made an acceptable version of the ZIS-10 truck tractor with a payload of 7 tons, and before the start of the war they managed to produce several hundred vehicles. But on K4 tractors you can mostly find the middle-aged, well-proven 12-liter Mercedes-Benz OM457LA engine, once designed for German buses.

Build bridges

Front axle with a load capacity of 7500 kg of model 6520 on small leaf springs, with anti-roll bar. The load capacity of the rear bogie on a spring-balance suspension is 26 tons. The wheelbase is 3300 mm, the distance between the centers of the wheels of the rear axles is 1440 mm. Drive axles of the KAMAZ-65806 model with double main gears, with wheel gearboxes with a lifting capacity of 13 tons each, respectively. The middle bridge is a passage bridge. The gear ratio of the main pair is 5.11. Cardan transmission from TIRSAN KARDAN company from Turkey. The brake mechanisms of all wheels are drum brakes with an electro-pneumatic drive.

Briefly about the cabin

The KAMAZ-65806-002-68 cab with a low roof, related to the Axor, has a four-point spring suspension, is equipped with air conditioning, an air-powered autonomous heater and a liquid pre-heater integrated into the engine cooling system. The driver's seat is pneumatic, the passenger seat is not sprung in any way. The cabin has one berth.

Purpose

The main purpose of the basic KamAZ-6580 truck is the transportation of bulk cargo. The model is equipped with a dump body, which makes it popular in construction. In addition, due to its excellent performance, this truck is very popular in various industrial sectors, quarries and other similar areas.

The lifting capacity of the 65206 is 16.6 tons per fifth wheel, with the ability to transport a load weighing 44 tons.

The vehicle is designed for long-haul transportation over various distances, both for intercity and international cargo transportation, taking into account operation in various climatic conditions. The volume of the car's fuel tank is from 400 to 600 liters, depending on the configuration.

The car can be equipped with an engine pre-heater (with a separate fuel tank), as well as an autonomous cabin heater and many other options.
