My personal opinion is that Chinese trucks are aimed at European roads, where they will occupy a good niche, but in our country they will quickly be shaken into pieces and bolts, but you won’t be able to fix it on your own on the road...

I WORK ON HOWO A7 8X4, the machine is very good!

Unfortunately, Chinese cars, especially trucks, are better than our domestic ones, and IVECO and FORD CARGO have come close to importing them. The guys in the West decided to make money on spare parts, and accordingly the reliability of the cars is falling, ours have so far reached volumes and fallen asleep again, and the Chinese are trying every day to improve the quality and reliability of their products. I consider the SAMS to be the best dump truck from China, only the first step of the door is a little low, even if it were folding it would be fine, otherwise it would be rubbish. We went to the VH company, or rather to the VH-Dongfeng division, to get acquainted with the Dongfeng dump truck. The Belgian company VH, part of the Turbo's Hoet Group holding, is well known in the Russian Federation as the largest dealer of DAF Trucks. In 2013, Turbo's Hoet Group signed a distribution agreement for Russia with the large Chinese automobile manufacturer Dongfeng, as a result of which the VH-Dongfeng division was created. In addition to selling equipment, the company offers service support with a European standard of customer service, has a huge warehouse of original spare parts for Dongfeng with an online ordering system, and also strictly observes warranty obligations.

To get acquainted, we were provided with a Dongfeng dump truck with a 6x4 wheel arrangement and a body volume of 19.3 m3. The truck looks quite modern, although we won’t talk about the exterior today, since it hasn’t changed in recent years. It is much more interesting to talk about the design improvements that were made by Chinese automakers taking into account the requirements presented by representatives of VH-Dongfeng. For example, according to new safety requirements, all Dongfeng dump trucks are equipped with underrun protection, front, rear and on the sides. The front towing device consists of two forks, which is very convenient. If the car breaks down or gets stuck, it can be quickly towed with a rigid hitch. The package also includes steel radiator protection at the bottom and protective grilles on the head optics. Direct fastening of the cardan was implemented (and not through an outboard bearing, as was before), which made it possible to obtain a more reliable unit with a minimum number of connections. The rear suspension spring fastenings have been strengthened; instead of two step-ladder brackets, four fastening elements are now used. The load capacity of the axles themselves has also been increased: two rear axles are 16 tons each (previously 13 tons each), the front axle is 9 tons (previously 7.5 tons). Changes to the cab mounting system made it possible to reduce the height of its mounting and make the cab suspension softer and more comfortable. It is also worth noting that the energy storage units are now located at the top rather than at the bottom. This solution made it possible to solve the issue of protecting components from mechanical damage from below. The PSU was also moved upstairs to avoid damage to the amplifier from below. During the inspection of the car, we noticed that all the wiring was neatly laid and protected by corrugation, bare wires did not hang or dangle anywhere.

The ergonomics of the driver's workplace complies with accepted standards

It is noteworthy that the tested dump truck was equipped with Aeolus tires, which have a quarry tread pattern, and not a highway one, as on some competitor dump trucks. The rubber itself is of higher quality. For example, Schmitz installs tires from this manufacturer on its trailers. As practice and customer reviews show, the quality of tires directly affects the maximum load capacity of a dump truck.

In general, the cabin interior is more than modern

The dump truck cabin is located quite high; you need to climb three steps. At the same time, the lower one is made movable to avoid damage. To facilitate entry into the cabin, two handrails are provided.

The interior of the cabin left a pleasant impression, and the cabin itself was quite spacious. There are no obvious problems with the ergonomics, the driver feels confident here, everything is at hand and the seating position is comfortable. The chair has a mechanical suspension with the usual adjustments. The steering wheel is pleasant to the touch and has an optimal grip diameter. The small gearbox lever is located in a convenient place and fits perfectly in the hand, next to it is the parking brake valve, as well as the control lever for raising/lowering the dump truck. The two-tone front panel looks good and is assembled at a decent level, without traditional wood-look inserts. The gaps between the panels are even, the plastic is of good quality, and there are no unpleasant odors in the cabin. But in the cabin there are a lot of glove compartments, boxes and pockets for small items. Even above the windshield there was room for a small niche. The driver will be pleased with the fairly wide sleeping compartment with curtains on the side windows and very high-quality and pleasant fabric upholstery.

Tipper superstructure made in China with a volume of 19.3 m3

In our case, the Dongfeng dump truck was equipped with a Cummins ISLe340 power unit. This is a 6-cylinder in-line turbodiesel with a displacement of 8.9 liters and a power of 340 hp. pp., which meets Euro 4 environmental standards with SCR technology and is coupled with a 12-speed manual synchronized gearbox. This is also an innovation; previously, only 9-speed non-synchronized gearboxes were installed on Dongfeng dump trucks.

The volume of the dump truck superstructure is 19.3 m3. The high-quality painted body is also made in China and is equipped with an exhaust gas heating system. The hydraulic cylinder for lifting the body is installed in front of the front wall, and the spare tire and underrun shoes are also located here. The tailgate locking mechanism consists of locks that press the tailgate and chains that release the locks when the body is raised. This design is also optimized. Previously, instead of chains, metal rods were used, and this solution was not entirely successful, since when lifting the body, the locks often got snagged. In addition, the dump truck includes a light to illuminate the unloading area.

You feel quite confident behind the wheel of a Dongfeng dump truck. Visibility deserves special mention. A huge windshield and a set of rear-view mirrors make it easy to control the situation around the dump truck. Sound insulation may be better than that of many Chinese competitors, but it’s impossible to say that the cabin is quiet. But there are no complaints about the smoothness of the ride. Even an unloaded car rides quite smoothly, while the suspension has a traditional design for dump trucks - no pneumatics, only multi-leaf springs with anti-roll bars. I liked the precise operation of the 12-speed synchronized gearbox, the lever moves are small, you get into the right gear the first time. The steering is quite intelligible, with good feedback, and the brakes are not satisfactory. Among the pleasant things, we note the presence of air conditioning and a radio in the cabin, and already in the basic configuration. It is also worth mentioning the presence of inter-axle and inter-wheel locks on the rear axles of the dump truck.

Overall, we liked the Dongfeng dump truck. This is a workhorse with a good level of comfort, while the design of the car is extremely simple.
