The frame of an all-wheel drive tractor is represented by an articulated frame, which consists of front and rear semi-frames (connected by horizontal and vertical hinges). The machine rotates due to the “kink” of the frame by 30° using a HAS (15° in the vertical plane). The main parts of hydrostatic steering are a gear pump driven by the internal combustion engine (when towing, by the wheels), a metering pump, a steering wheel with a steering column, two hydraulic cylinders and a tank, and pipelines.
The power unit is attached to the front semi-frame using rubber-metal shock absorbers, which together with the clutch, transfer case and gearbox form a single unit. At the rear there is a PTO gearbox, driven by a cardan transmission.
The driving front and rear axles of the tractor differ from each other in the lengths of the sleeves and axle shafts. The rear axle is attached rigidly to the semi-frame, the front axle is attached using springs. The agricultural machine is equipped with a stepped manual gearbox (4 ranges forward and 2 reverse). Thanks to hydraulic clutches, switching occurs without interrupting the power flow within the range. The dry friction clutch is controlled by a pedal with a pneumatic amplifier.

The braking system consists of shoe brakes on each wheel with a pneumatic drive, as well as a parking band brake.
The tractor's attachments are connected using a hinge-lever mechanism (two- and three-point schemes). Additionally, the tractor can be equipped with lower links with hook grips (three-point adjustment scheme). The hydraulic system of the attachment includes two double-acting power cylinders and a five-section proportional distributor (mechanical control). It is possible to install a three-section distributor P-80 or 5LSC90 Bondioli&Pavesi upon additional order.
Modifications
The HTZ-17221 variations have no external differences. The following official varieties are currently available:
- 17221-09. It has an upgraded cabin compared to the base version, as well as a modified upholstery that makes it look slightly different.
- 17221-18, 19, 21. In this series, the additional figure means changed engine power to 180, 190 and 210 horsepower, respectively.
- Limited editions. They come off the assembly line in small batches due to their highly specialized purpose. For example, 17221-B was intended for work in swampy areas, which was possible due to the increased tire width. It is extremely difficult to establish the exact number of such variations, because they are in the nature of a private order.
Power
The HTZ-17221 tractor is equipped as standard with a liquid-cooled V-shaped four-stroke engine YaMZ-236M2. Its operating power is 165 hp. (121 kW). The engine is equipped with an electric starter and a Thermo 90ST preheater. The agricultural machine can also be equipped with YaMZ-238KM2-3 and D-260 engines.

Review of the HTZ-17221 model range
At the moment, four additional series of the HTZ-17221 tractor have been produced, which differ from the basic assembly in a number of ways:
- Modification with index "09". The main difference is the modernized single-seat cabin and car lining. In technical terms, the “09” series has not undergone any changes and, like its prototype, is equipped with a YaMZ-236 engine with a power of 175 hp.
- Model with index "18". This car was not changed externally, but was equipped with a 180 hp power unit.
- KhTZ-17221-19 is a tractor on which the six-cylinder D-260 engine of the Minsk Motor Plant was first installed. Its power is 211 hp.
- The modification with the index “21” was the last release of the wheeled tractor of the 17221 series. It again returned to the engine of the Yaroslavl plant, and, unlike previous versions, they installed an eight-cylinder YaMZ-238 engine with a power of 240 hp.

Installing more modern engines does not make the tractor difficult to operate. This machine is characterized by high traction, which allows it to perform basic work during the sowing campaign and soil cultivation.
Transmission
The model with index 17221 is available with a manual transmission with hydraulic drive. Speeds change on the fly without delay. Downshifts and upshifts shift smoothly even under load. To select the optimal operating mode of the machine, 16 speeds are provided. The clutch in this tractor is a dry single-plate clutch. In addition to the transmission, a power take-off shaft is supplied, operating in the range of 500-1000 rpm. The PTO box is located at the rear of the tractor.
Control
The machine is equipped with a hydraulic steering mechanism, which is combined with a separate hydraulic system. Hydraulic cylinders are placed between the half-frames, changing the angle of which allows for turning.
HTZ-17221 has two driving axles. They differ from each other in the location of the main gear unit and the length of the axle shafts. Both axles are equipped with a differential lock.
The front axle is connected to its semi-frame using semi-elliptical springs with additional shock absorbers. The rear axle mount is rigid.
Hydraulic system
The hydraulic equipment is connected through a block with couplings located near the rear wings. The hydraulic system is equipped with automatic adjustment of attachments, and this to some extent allows saving fuel consumption.
To connect attachments, a hitch is provided, which includes two hydraulic cylinders. Due to the towing device, towbar and tie-down bracket, it allows you to attach semi-mounted and trailed mechanisms to the tractor
Device
The modernization of the T-150K tractor, which resulted in the appearance of the KhTZ-17221, was based primarily on the use of a “breakable” frame. It is a hinged connection of two semi-frames that change position in the horizontal and vertical directions.
The power unit is installed on the front half-frame and is closed on all sides by the hood. For quick access to the motor, two removable panels are provided on the sides. The clutch mechanism is supplemented with a pneumatic booster.
This model is equipped with a multifunctional cabin with double glazing. This allows you to increase the level of noise insulation. For driver comfort, an air conditioning and heating system is provided. This makes it possible to operate the tractor all year round.
The cabin has a wide glass line and is equipped with large rear-view mirrors. The seat and steering column are adjustable in height and horizontally. The control levers are at arm's length.
During operation, attachments can be connected to the tractor. It is compatible with:
- plows;
- cultivators;
- harrows;
- seeders;
- units for reclamation work;
- cutters;
- mounted loaders;
- equipment for clearing streets from snow;
- bulldozer blade;
- log grabbers.
Cabin
The HTZ-17221 tractor is equipped with a two-seat frame cab, which is mounted on four rubber shock absorbers. The operator's chair is sprung with an elastic suspension (hydraulic shock absorber) and a soft cushion and backrest. Can be adjusted for driver height and weight. The additional seat is unsprung and non-adjustable.
The standard equipment of the tractor includes an air conditioner; upon request, a ventilation and heating unit can be installed, which provides blowing and heating of the windows. The cladding is available in two versions: metal (hood with a removable radiator grille and opening sides) or plastic (hinged and locked hood).

Advantages and disadvantages
The basic advantage is unpretentiousness to operating conditions and high maintainability. An experienced mechanic will be able to return the HTZ-17221 to service very quickly if spare parts are available. The movable frame significantly reduces the load and increases maneuverability.
Tractor drivers consider the cabin, which requires improvement, to be the main drawback. To make it really warm, you need to lay an additional layer of insulation under the skin. You also need to seal the ventilation holes leading into the engine compartment. This will prevent dust from getting inside and also eliminate unpleasant odors. The windows are also positioned incorrectly. In the summer, they collect all the dust and direct it in a stream towards the tractor driver. You need to reinstall it in the opposite direction immediately after purchase.
Features of operation
The HTZ-17221 tractor has established itself as a reliable machine that, with timely maintenance, can operate for more than 10 years without major repairs. According to machine operators, the most common problems are:
- failure of the water pump responsible for the operation of the cooling system;
- failure of the fuel pump;
- bearing failure.
The weak point is the steering metering pump and clutch.
The advantages of this tractor include:
