This model is an adapted civilian version of a military tank carrier, which participated in many military operations in hot spots in Russia and abroad. Chassis

They are characterized by increased strength, have successfully passed tests at military training grounds, withstand loads in the difficult climatic conditions of the Far North, and are used in hot deserts and humid tropics. During manufacturing, the axles undergo a special heat treatment process. The abraded surface of the axle is also treated with high-frequency currents, which ensures excellent wear resistance of the part surface. Suspensions produced by ChMZAP use only domestically produced parts. They are tested on test benches. This means that buying a trailer with such a suspension will be the right decision!

An article by Alexey Brusilov, published in a special project of the Russian newspaper Russian Arms, [1] talks about an 8 X 8 wheeled vehicle being created in the Ural region. It is capable of transporting the heaviest equipment of the Russian army. Including promising ones, such as machines of the unified Armata family. For example, the heaviest of them is the 57-ton armored repair and recovery vehicle T-16.

According to the creators of the tractor, the total weight of the road train can reach 85 tons. Its cabin with four doors can accommodate up to 6 people. The appearance of Alexey Brusilov’s article prompted the idea to talk about which troops should use the above tractors, tell a little about the structure of these troops and their equipment.

In the 1980s, the Soviet Army also began to form units of multi-axle heavy wheeled tractors. They were armed with Minsk MAZ-537s. There were separate regiments in the Belarusian, Kiev, Carpathian and other military districts. One battalion of tractors fought as part of the 40th Army in Afghanistan. But after 1991, these military units were reduced and then disbanded.

In 2022, an article appeared in the Izvestia publication, republished by NEWS 2 in the Military Equipment section “The Ministry of Defense began the formation of unique military units - regiments, battalions and companies of multi-axle heavy wheeled tractors.” [4]

Russian tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled artillery mounts will travel to deployment sites not under their own power, but on special multi-axle heavy tractors. Their task is the prompt delivery of tank and motorized rifle divisions to battlefields over distances of thousands of kilometers.

In this case, military equipment will be ready to enter battle without preparation - “from the wheels.”

The first three battalions of tractors have already appeared at the beginning of this year (2017) in the Central and Eastern military districts. They are based in Chita, Khabarovsk and Chebarkul. And by the beginning of 2022, such military units will appear in the Southern and Western districts.

From the data published in the above article it follows that MTKT battalions are equipped with three-axle 11-ton KamAZ-65225.44 tractors. (Index 44 means that the car has a new cabin, distinguished primarily by a high ceiling).

On a special semi-trailer, they can transport cargo weighing up to 65 tons. This means that a road train (tractor and semi-trailer) can easily cope with transporting T-72 tanks (weighing 41 tons), T-14 Armata (48 tons), MSTA self-propelled guns and " Coalition" (42–49 tons), as well as infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers of all series. At the same time, KamAZ-65225.44 with a replaceable crew makes a march of a thousand kilometers per day.

The tractor unit was presented at the exhibition with a low-bed semi-trailer ChMZAP-99901-0000020. This is a three-axle semi-trailer with a gable tire, with a load capacity of up to 63 tons. The length of the loading area is 9860 mm, the loading height is 1100 mm. The semi-trailer's suspension is dependent, spring-balanced, hydromechanical support devices. The semi-trailer is equipped with additional equipment: two fuel tanks with a volume of 500 liters each and a hanging mechanism that ensures the rear part of the semi-trailer frame of the full weight is lifted when servicing the suspension, an alarm system for an emergency drop in tire pressure, and an autonomous small-sized hydraulic unit. Unfortunately, for certain reasons, the plant does not provide other characteristics in open publications and on the Internet for the ChMZAP-99901-0000020 semi-trailer.

I would like to note that the road train included in the BAZ tractor has a number of advantages in relation to the road trains discussed above:

  1. The cabin has two rows of seats, which allows the crews of combat vehicles to be transported together with their armored vehicles.
  2. The plant has developed and used a frame-panel cabin, on which armor can be used to protect drivers and passengers from bullets and shrapnel.

However, it should be the property of the Almaz-Antey concern and the bulk of its military products are focused on the production of BAZ-64022 tractors for the S-400 and S-500 complexes.

And this is the decisive weapon for the country’s security. But apparently. due to the lack of production capacity of the BAZ plant, or due to the need to support the Belarusian MZKT (the author does not know for sure), Almaz-Antey is forced to produce part of the S-400 complexes on the MZKT-7310/MAZ-543M chassis [10].

This fact may indicate that the BAZ tractor cannot be put into service in large quantities in the MTKT units of the Automobile Troops. In this regard, the article by Alexey Brusilov, a commentary on which is given, is of particular relevance. The article talks about the Ural-63708 tractor unit with an 8x8 wheel arrangement, created on the Tornado-U theme.

The vehicles are still under development and have not been accepted for supply to the Russian Armed Forces. The family should include cars with wheel formulas 4 X 4, 6 X 6, 8 X 8 and 10 X 10.

The enterprises of the GAZ Group, which include the Automotive division in the Trucks division, were subject to the latest sanctions from the United States.

The fact is that the new sanctions imposed by the US Treasury on April 6 against 24 major Russian businessmen and officials, as well as 15 companies, prohibit business cooperation with them not only for US individuals and organizations, but can also apply to legal entities and individuals from other countries who carry out “significant transactions” with them. Entrepreneur Oleg Deripaska and his controlled companies En+, GAZ Group, Basic Element, and Renova of Viktor Vekselberg were subject to the new restrictions.[11]

One can hope that the new tractors will be developed within the time frame established by the State Defense Order, then it will be possible to describe these vehicles in detail and provide their tactical and technical characteristics.

Conclusions:

  1. The Special Forces of the RF Armed Forces include Automobile Troops.
  2. Units and subunits of multi-axle heavy wheeled tractors are being formed in the Automobile Troops.
  3. The main road train of these units is KamAZ-65225.44 coupled with the low-load semi-trailer ChMZAP-9990-0000073-02.
  4. In addition to KamAZ, the Ural-63704 road trains with the ChMZAP 9990-073-03 semi-trailer and the BAZ-6403-012, BAZ-6403-15 tractors coupled with the ChMZAP-99901-0000020 semi-trailers have been developed.
  5. The main disadvantage of the Kama and Ural tractors is the lack of seats for the crews of the objects being transported; the Bryansk vehicles are equipped with such seats, but the use of BAZ vehicles in the army is limited.
  6. The carrying capacity of the Ural-63704 road train coupled with the ChMZAP 9990-073-03 semi-trailer does not ensure the transportation of promising armored vehicles.
  7. The creation of new tractors of the Tornado-U family, in particular the Ural-63708 tractor, and semi-trailers is intended to eliminate all the noted shortcomings and should contribute to a significant increase in the mobility and combat effectiveness of the RF Armed Forces.
