History of the Krone brand

The world-famous brand of the engineering giant, as often happens, began with one person. And this happened back in 1906. The company's founder, Bernard Krone, started his own small business. He was a blacksmith by profession and made custom-made devices useful for peasant life. First there were hoes, and then seeders and mowers.

In 1948, the first production line opens. At that time, the Krohn artel was known throughout Germany for high-quality agricultural machinery.

In 1963, the second enterprise began operating - they began to assemble trailers and semi-trailers. In 1971, the company produced the first three-axle semi-trailer. By this time, it had several models of trailed equipment.

In 1990, the Kron semi-trailer of the so-called “mega format” was introduced: the volume of the serial cargo platform exceeded 100 m3.

In 2001, the production of refrigerated semi-trailers opened in Denmark, separated into a separate line of brand development.

In 2008, the company presented its proprietary Eco Liner design, which significantly saves fuel.

Nowadays, the company occupies a leading position in the global market of specialized equipment, including trailed structures: refrigerators, flatbeds, vans, trawls, tilt and curtain side semi-trailers.

The Krone company offers Russian carriers the extended curtain-side semi-trailer Profi Liner Extra Large. The increase in length by 2.73 m increased the volume of cargo space by 18 m3, while the coupling with the tractor does not exceed the longitudinal clearance permitted on the roads. The rules for transporting goods by road allow the operation of road trains up to 20 m long on Russian roads. In the European Union, the longitudinal dimension of a road train (tractor + semi-trailer) is limited to 16.5 m. Most standard semi-trailers, accordingly, have a length of 13.6 m, internal the volume of cargo space is about 90 m3.

eXtra Large was based on Profi Liner, already familiar to the Russian market.

International carriers are forced to adhere to European standards, but transport companies operating in Russia are showing increasing interest in extended semi-trailers permitted by our rules. This is not surprising, since the reduction of unit costs per unit of transported cargo has become relevant, including in the light of charging fees for trucks weighing 12 tons. Until recently, extended versions of semi-trailers were offered mainly by domestic trailer manufacturers.

When loading heavily, be aware of axle loads

And now the Krone company has come to meet Russian carriers halfway. The German manufacturer of trailed equipment has developed an extended modification of the Profi Liner eXtra Large tilt semi-trailer. The name hides an increase in length of 2.73 m and in volume of 18 m3. In the language of truckers, this is an additional six Euro pallets on board. The model was presented at the COMTRANS 2015 exhibition. Previously, the company reported that the first batch of Profi Liner eXtra Large was delivered to Naberezhnye Chelny for the Delko company. eXtra Large was based on the curtain version of Profi Liner, already familiar to the Russian market. Key changes affected the frame. The supporting structure on the new model consists of two parts (the main one is 14.5 m long and the extension of its rear part, secured with a bolted connection). This technical solution is due to the limited length of the baths for cataphoresis treatment using the total immersion method (so-called KTL treatment), which is offered as standard for all Krone semi-trailers. Serious anti-corrosion treatment is extremely important for year-round operation of a semi-trailer, especially in Russia, where de-icing agents are poured onto the asphalt for several months of the year.

Reinforced SAF Off-Road axles are used especially for Russia

The manufacturer pays a lot of attention to the strength of the semi-trailer frame. The main frame, like most manufacturers, is welded. It is made from high-alloy steel with an I-section. The frame profile is not the same along the entire length: in the front part, closer to the king pin, the I-beam flange has been reduced. The variable-section frame allows you to reduce the height of the semi-trailer in the area of ​​the fifth wheel coupling, while it holds the road well. The height of the fifth wheel coupling without load is 1150 mm.

The platform floor - Trailer Safety Floor is made of 28-layer moisture-resistant plywood, 30 mm thick and can withstand loads from a forklift up to 5400 kg. An anti-slip polymer coating is laid on top of the plywood. It is important that the floor fastening bolts do not damage the paint layer of the frame, so corrosion of the threaded holes is not a problem.

For the extended ProfiLiner, as for the standard models of Krone curtainsider semi-trailers, a practical load securing package is available, including the MultiLock external frame. It is made of a steel profile laid inside the body along the long sides. It has fastening holes with a pitch of 100 mm, intended for universal fixation of cargo. Optionally for the Profi Liner, the manufacturer can offer the MultiStrap system, which allows the driver, when securing high loads, to no longer throw tension straps over the load from the ladder on the side of the trailer. Tensioning straps are installed under the roof of the semi-trailer before loading, and by simply pulling them from the floor, they can be quickly and safely installed on the load.

The robust three-piece front wall is made of steel and is bolted to the frame. The rear wall is made in the form of aluminum swing doors with four locks. For access on board there is a folding ladder with large and convenient steps. The rear underrun guard and rear light holder are designed as separate components for ease of repair. The separate design of these parts allows for quick and easy replacement by bolting.

The body superstructure received a 125 mm high Edsha sliding roof, making it possible to work at terminals with a limited loading and unloading area. The roof awning meets the structural strength requirements of DIN EN 12642, code XL. For loading and unloading by crane directly at the front wall, the sliding roof can also be moved from the front to the rear by simply unhooking the awning fasteners.

Krone now installs components under its own brand

The Profi Liner eXtra Large has an internal length of 16,355 mm, a width of 2,480 mm and a height of 2,690 mm, creating a useful cargo space of 109.1 m3. It can be filled with lightweight cargo: household and office equipment, furniture, finishing materials. Practical sliding racks, controlled by a single lever, ensure fast and economical loading; a special device with a ratcheting mechanism is used to tension the awning. Loading and unloading time in warehouse terminals is reduced by the impressive height of the side openings of 2600 mm. With such a “ceiling”, any warehouse forklifts feel confident. The eXtra Large's own weight is 7,050 kg; with a permissible maximum weight of 39,000 kg, the semi-trailer can carry a payload of 31,950 kg. A basket for two spare parts, a pallet box and bunks are available on request, which are usually used for the convenience of transporting pipes and other non-palletized cargo.

Especially for operation in Russia, reinforced SAF Off-Road axles are used (on models for the European market, Krone also uses axles under its own brand) with disc brakes and electronically controlled air suspension. The functional SAF suspension arm and axle beam form a single, maintenance-free unit. This eliminates the need for items such as stepladders, clamping plates, axle plates, stepladder nuts, etc. The entire structure is very strong yet lightweight. And the patented, functionally safe shape of the SAF functional suspension arm reliably protects the brake chamber from damage. The compact SAF hub unit is factory adjusted and requires no maintenance for its entire service life.

In general, Krone places great importance on ease of maintenance and repair. This is also supported by the “everything from one source” concept, which means that all components, including rear lights and connectors for connecting to the tractor, are Krone branded. This concept, according to the manufacturer, is designed to significantly facilitate customers’ daily work. The supply of spare parts is also greatly simplified, since customers can order all parts directly using the Krone article number.
