Kamaz 43118 2 doors. onboard, 260 hp, 10 manual transmission, - speed sensor malfunction

I'll start from far away! In the summer, my partner was driving his KamAZ 43118 truck crane through a ford, and at that moment the electric coupling of the cooling system must have turned on. The result was a water hammer and the plastic fan shattered into pieces! The result was disastrous! Radiator - in half! The intercooler is distorted! The wires that go to the ECU, which is attached by idiotic designers to the front of the internal combustion engine, have been cut off! The truck crane stands dead in the middle of the stream! They called URAL-WATCH from the base to drag the poor fellow to the base! What am I talking about? Yes, I have the same system as on that truck crane! The electric coupling is activated automatically by a simple classic temperature sensor which turns it on to cool the radiator. All! The designers thought that was enough! But the fact is that the sensor itself is in an inaccessible place - under the generator! And to unscrew it you need a special deep socket with an extension, they don’t care! And they don’t care that a 12V sensor from a classic is installed on a car with 24V, and that it burns out five times a month! Kick-ass, for whom and for what are cars being improved? Why did KAMAZ vehicles with EURO 3 and 2 have keys for switching the electric coupling, but these EURO 4 vehicles do not have them? Why are we so unlucky! Were they smoking other dope at the factory at that time? And if the sensor itself fails, the car will soon stop due to overheating of the internal combustion engine! Totally fucked up! Well, in general, I decided to get confused and introduce myself a key to switch and disable the electric coupling like I had on the MAZURIK, fortunately it’s not difficult, if only I had the desire! And so, we buy a three-core electrical wire of stupid squares, about three meters. If possible, we put the wire in a protective corrugation and find routes from the cockpit from the power button to the clutch engagement sensor! It was not possible to take a photo of the sensor itself and the connection, because... It's hard to get there. When I connected, I disconnected the wire, pulled it out to an accessible place and cut and twisted it! In general, a negative wire approaches the sensor and breaks at the sensor! I broke one wire and connected it to two wires, and paralleled the third with the second wire, simple! I connected it to a three-position key, if you mix up something in the connection, it’s not a big deal, you can rearrange it during use! Now, in the upper position, the clutch is turned on forcibly - if the sensor fails, the middle mode is automatic, and the lower position is completely turned off, so that there is no problem like with my partner’s truck crane! Because all the factory troubles are connected via a relay, then I don’t bother with the relays anymore! By the way, its repair resulted in 60 thousand Russian mowers. And my entire design cost 200 rubles! Who will pay me extra 59,800 rubles? And I also connected an LED light that turns on when the clutch is activated! So purely for myself, it was like that at MAZ, I’m used to it! I connected one wire from the diode to the plus, the second to the key, on which all the wires are minus! It seems like that! If you don't understand anything, ask! Good luck to all!

The KamAZ brake system is thought out to the smallest nuances, since the technical condition of the vehicle and the possibility of safe driving depend on it. The installed KamAZ speed sensor is an important device, as it allows you to monitor the technical performance of the vehicle.

Where is the speed sensor located?

In most cases, the sensors are located at the gearbox and are connected by a special drive to the speedometer, the data of which is read to determine speed and mileage.

Thus, it is advisable to find functional units taking into account the layout of a specific KamAZ model and the specifics of the technical system. The devices have different designs, since the influence of the location of the unit is noted.

Contact sensors are considered less reliable due to the interaction of spare parts and constant rotation. However, such devices are often used, as they are installed instead of a mechanical speedometer drive and allow you to modernize brake systems. Contact models are characterized by optimal reliability.

Sometimes on KamAZ, speed sensors can be installed without direct contact with the rotating shaft. To measure speed, a drive disk or rotor is often used, since this device is auxiliary. Contactless models are becoming in demand, as a result of which they are often installed on modern KamAZ models.

The KamAZ zf speed sensor is also popular, as it is created according to modern standards. The package includes a modern transfer case that increases reliability. A working unit allows you to find out the exact technical characteristics of the vehicle. Over the past few years, such devices have been successfully used on domestic vehicles, including KamAZ. Motorists remain satisfied, because with proper regular maintenance, additional benefits are noted, or rather, economical fuel consumption and a minimal amount of substances released into the air.

Fact! Any sensors work only on physical principles. Contact devices usually use the Hall effect and magnetoresistive effect (MRE), optocouplers. Non-contact sensors most often operate on the Hall effect and much less frequently on MRE.

Operating principle of the speed sensor

Most sensors operate on the Hall effect. To determine speed and mileage, frequency pulses are used, which are sent at a certain interval. Impulses arise when the wheels rotate, so the mechanics calculate the data and they are displayed on transport devices. Typically, up to 6 thousand signals are issued for every kilometer. The KamAZ Euro speed sensor is considered the most advanced, since it was created on the basis of modern standards and European experience in the automotive sector, and is distinguished by its information content and accuracy.

Contact sensors

The basis of such devices is a corresponding microcircuit with a special plate and an amplification circuit. The chip and magnet do not move. To change the magnetic field and read pulses, rings with special slots rotate. The presence of small connectors allows you to read indicators for display on devices. The old-style KamAZ 5320 speed sensor was made using this principle.

Non-contact sensors

The device operates on the Hall effect, but the design is different. On the shaft of the unit (gearbox or axle gearbox) there is a rotor or impulse disk with areas that are magnetized. There is a gap between the Hall chip and the rotor, but pulse signals are successfully read through standard connectors. This KamAZ speed sensor circuit is considered reliable, since spare parts interact less with each other and unwanted mechanical influence is prevented.

Possible malfunctions of the speed sensor

KamAZ 55102, 65115 often have device malfunctions, because such models have been produced for a long time and there are numerous used models on the domestic market. Malfunctions are manifested by problems with idle speed (the car may stall), corrosive changes in contacts.

The KamAZ gearbox and speed sensor must be replaced, otherwise the following problems may appear:

  • lack of information about mileage and speed due to inoperative devices;
  • malfunction of the engine (impaired idling speed, excessive fuel consumption, loss of power);
  • serious problems with security systems.

Note! Be sure to use a sensor that was installed earlier or recommended by the car manufacturer. If the unit is incorrectly selected, it will not be possible to install it, switching between speeds will not occur correctly, or the technical data will not be read correctly.

Speedometer functions

The sensor is primarily connected to the speedometer. For this reason, you need not only to know where the KamAZ speed sensor is located, to carefully monitor its serviceability, but also to take into account the functionality:

  • speed measurement and display;
  • displaying information about the distance traveled;
  • informing about the current time;
  • alarm about exceeding the permissible speed;
  • measurement of the number of pulses for correct reading of characteristics.

Speed sensors on KamAZ 43118 vehicles and other models must be operational for safe driving, both in the city and on the highways.

To connect all the electrical systems and devices in the car, an electrical network is used, which allows you to bring all the components together. The KAMAZ-65115 color wiring diagram is a diagram indicating all electrical elements, the use of which is important when repairing wiring. You can learn more about the elements of the circuit, as well as wiring faults, from this material.

Device

The speedometer on KamAZ is a device for measuring the speed of a vehicle. The device connects to a speed sensor and a topographer.

  • mechanical;
  • electronic;
  • analog.

Analog can be:

  1. Pointer - speed is shown by moving the arrow across the dial.
  2. Tape - the location of the tape on the horizontal scale shows the speed.
  3. Drum - the indicator is placed on a drum that rotates in proportion to the change in speed.

A mechanical dial meter is installed on many machines.

Analog meter device:

  1. Worm unit, which is installed in the gearbox.
  2. A gear that rotates together with the gearbox shaft. This makes it possible to calculate the rotation speed of the drive and wheels.
  3. The wire that runs from the worm assembly to the instrument panel.
  4. Magnetic element.
  5. A metal plate attached to the arrow.
  6. Scale.
  7. Spring.

An accompanying element of the device is a counter, which determines the length of the path traveled and is connected to the cable via a worm gear.

In the electronic device, there is no mechanical connection between the data on the instrument panel and the transmission output shaft. The device is:

  1. Optoelectronic, in which there is a high-speed part with a cable, and the speed data is determined by photointerrupter pulses.
  2. Bestrosov, in which a magnet is installed, rotating in place with the gearbox shaft. Changes in the magnetic field are converted into pulses by the bridge circuit.

A popular meter that operates using the Hall effect. Changes in output voltage are proportional to the rotation speed of the disk. The frequency of the voltage pulses allows you to determine the speed of the machine.

How does a speedometer work?

There are two main modifications of speedometers:

The principle of operation of a mechanical speedometer is to transform the shaft rotation speed into energy, which moves the needle. The speedometer drive is located in a manual or automatic gearbox and is connected to the indicator using a flexible cable protected by a metal casing. The tips of both sides of the cable are made in the form of a tetrahedron, due to which they effectively transmit rotation from the drive to the indicator. A mechanical speedometer is always connected to the odometer (vehicle mileage indicator) and forms a single unit with it.

The operating principle of an electronic speedometer consists of a sensor that produces pulses of a certain frequency and duration (depending on the speed of the car). The sensor is connected either to a separate electronic speedometer or to the on-board computer. Both the computer and the speedometer perform the same function - they count the number of pulses per unit of time and convert the value into understandable kilometers or miles per hour.

Why does not it work

If the speedometer fails or does not work, the reasons may be as follows:

  1. The gears of the worm gear of the device are made of plastic. Since the material is fragile, this can cause the gears to break.
  2. The cable broke off where it connects to the speed system, which is screwed into the gearbox.
  3. The sensor contacts have oxidized or the power supply wire has broken. At the same time, the power is checked using a multimeter.
  4. There was a breakdown of the electronic part of the device located in the panel.
  5. There were distortions in the device readings. Most often this is due to instrument calibration, which is difficult to perform.

Speed is measured by the rotation of one axle of the final drive, and when turning, the wheel located on the inner radius travels a shorter distance than the outer one.

But the main reason for the inaccuracy of the data is the size of the wheels. The larger the wheel, the greater the distance the machine will travel in 1 revolution of the shaft.

The meters are mistaken by 5-10 km/h. Sometimes inaccurate data causes accidents. Therefore, car manufacturers, when calibrating electronic devices, make sure that the device on a new car does not show an underestimated speed.

Location

DSA is an abbreviation for vehicle speed sensor. DSA is a traditional speedometer drive, mounted inside the gearbox, transfer case or drive axle gearbox, monitoring the speed of the secondary or intermediate shafts. The system then transmits the data to the speed measurement controller.

Different modifications of Kamaz vehicles have different locations of the speed sensor. This is determined by the design features of a particular model.

  • The most common option is to enter the speedometer system. The component transmits data by measuring the current speed. That is why, when hearing the phrase “the speedometer does not work,” it is more logical to assume that the sensor is broken (this arrangement began to be taken as a basis, starting with KamAZ 43118).
  • The injection, ignition, and other engine systems may hide a speed detector inside to adjust the operating system of the internal combustion engine. In this way, synchronization is achieved between the driving characteristics of the tractor and the power. While driving, the dynamics of the engine are constantly changing. Located inside the injection system, the sensor can monitor the dynamics of changes in engine speed, calculating the intensity of movement.
  • Any alarm or security systems may contain speed indicators. This system works similar to cruise control. In addition to fixing the speed, it controls a certain mode; if the driver suddenly loses his vigilance, the system will adjust the intensity of traffic for him.
  • The rarest case of arrangement, almost never found on Kamaz vehicles, is the power steering. As a rule, such a location is used by racing modifications of tractors. This system consists of an algorithm for driving a car through a speed limit. In other words, controllability is directly related to traffic intensity.

One small part that has a very specific functionality can become part of completely different mechanisms. However, the location inside the speedometer mechanism remains the most popular among related ones.

How to connect

The speedometer connection diagram, calibration and pinout instructions are available in the operating instructions for the device. At KamAZ, during manufacturing, the device is configured and a seal is installed on it. The need for adjustment arises when replacing a sensor, dump semi-trailer, wheels, axles.

The speedometer setting is as follows:

  • KPPS is determined (coefficient of the speedometer indicating device);
  • the value of the maximum speed is adjusted;
  • the current time is adjusted.

KamAZ speedometers cannot be repaired. Their disassembly leads to malfunction. The meter is replaced by specialists.

If seals, connecting wires, or sensors have been broken, the warranty service of the device is terminated.

Seals are installed at the manufacturer.

How to wind a digital tachograph with a cryptographic information protection unit

Drivers are sometimes tempted to wind up the tachograph and thus increase the car's mileage. Is it really possible to do this? Is it possible to display the mileage on the speedometer if the car already has a digital tachograph with a cryptographic information protection unit? Let's look at this issue in detail.

How to wind a tachograph?

Get a free consultation on tachographs

How the speedometer works

When a car moves, its speed sensor transmits impulses that enter the speedometer. He converts these impulses into mileage. To wind the speedometer, “craftsmen” use the following scheme:

  1. Electronic equipment is installed on the car, which simulates the signals transmitted by the speed sensor. Connect it directly to the signal wire going to the speedometer.
  2. After activating the winding, the device begins to produce false pulses. And the speedometer perceives them as signals coming from the speed sensor.
  3. A higher oscillation frequency is set than during normal operation of the sensor, and a large mileage is accumulated in a short period of time.

How does a digital tachograph work?

The tachograph is installed between the speed sensor and the speedometer. And the signals coming from the sensor are first processed by it. The digital tachograph uses the same principle as a conventional speedometer. And if you connect a winding device to it, the tachograph, having analyzed the fluctuations, will also wind up the mileage. But there are two significant differences in the operation of the device:

In this case, the vehicle speed and travel time must be taken into account. Therefore, if the driver decides to increase mileage by winding, this is very easy to determine.

You just need to get information from the tachograph and compare the speed of the car and the time spent traveling. A typical traffic graph on such a printout looks like a broken line. When the winding is activated, it turns into an absolutely flat straight line.

In this case, the device also detects a significant excess of the permissible speed.

Get a free consultation on tachographs

What if you turn it off?

Some drivers try to turn off the tachograph and try to wind up the speedometer itself. But that doesn't help. As soon as the digital tachograph is disconnected from the power supply, it will be immediately recorded. As a result, there is a significant difference in the speedometer readings and the length of the path that the car actually drove. Everything immediately becomes obvious: the driver was winding up the speedometer.

Consequences of winding the tachograph

The workshop will immediately void the warranty on the digital tachograph if the seal on it is damaged. No one will repair it. And employees can draw up a report on unauthorized repairs and send it to the local branch of Rostransnadzor. In other words, this scenario will not bring anything good.

They are disappointing for "adventurous" drivers. It’s not difficult to screw up a tachograph, but it’s even easier to detect this fact. Now you won’t be able to attribute mileage, drain and sell fuel with impunity. Therefore, questions about how to disable or rewind the tachograph lose their relevance.

What the hell did you decide right away, the guy works on a Kamaz truck, the salary is paid in pennies in Izhevsk, so he’s thinking along the way how to write off the DT so that the kids can buy it for candy, besides, anything can happen... This is about you going to Primorye, resell it in order to swindle it out , fuck, bitch, etc... no offense, there is no point in reeling off a Kamaz, there are few private owners for them, they buy them based on condition rather than mileage. For the author, ask at a parking lot somewhere in Izhevsk, they will tell you, you can use any method, even an electronic one...

KamAZ speed sensor pinout

The speed sensor affects the amount of fuel supplied, as well as the amount of air that flows past the throttle valve. All these factors will affect the speedometer readings, therefore, for its connection and further proper operation, it must be carried out strictly in accordance with the diagram.

Pinout is a digital designation of connector functions, necessary for the correct order of connecting various parts and cables.

Modern KamAZ models, for example, 65115, are powered by Euro-3, Euro-4 and Euro-5 engines. Trucks with such engines are most often equipped with contact sensors located at the gearbox. The sensors on KamAZ of the Euro series are recognized as the most reliable in comparison with other models.

The principle of operation of the speed sensor is based on the supply of an impulse from the rotating wheels, which, when entering the device, is converted and, through the clutch with the speedometer, displays a certain numerical value on the LCD.

If the speed sensor is faulty, there may be problems with the engine idling, the car may not. In this case, the gearbox and speed sensor need to be replaced. You can independently configure the speedometer and motion sensor only in accordance with the pinout:

Kamaz 43118 2 doors. onboard, 260 hp, 10 manual transmission, — speed sensor replacement

A speed sensor (abbreviated as DS or DSA) is installed on all modern cars and serves to measure the speed of the car and transmit this information to the ECU.
How to replace the speed sensor (DS)

-First of all, you need to turn off the engine, cool it and de-energize the system by disconnecting the terminals from the battery. This is very important to do in order to avoid injuries during repair work; -if there are parts that make it difficult to access the detector, you need to disconnect them. But, as a rule, this device is available; - the block of wires is disconnected from the DS; -after which the device itself is dismantled. Depending on the brand of the machine and the type of sensor, it can be attached using threads or latches; - a new sensor is installed in place of the faulty sensor; - the system is assembled in the reverse order; -all that remains is to start the car and make sure that the new device is working. To do this, just drive a little - if the speedometer readings correspond to the actual speed, then the repair was successful.

When purchasing a DS, you must strictly observe the device labeling in order to install exactly the sensor model that will function properly. You can select analogs for some of them, but you need to carefully study each of them to be sure of their interchangeability.

The process of replacing the detector itself is not complicated, but if you are not sure how to make the replacement, or the problem has arisen with a novice car enthusiast, you should contact a service station and entrust your car to specialists.

In any case, before you begin self-repair, you need to carefully study the instructions and manuals, and also strictly follow the recommendations and diagrams described in the manuals.

Signs of a malfunctioning speed sensor

The most common sign that the speed sensor has failed is problems with idle speed. If the car stalls at idle (when changing gears or when coasting), among other things, you should definitely check the speed sensor. Another sign that the speed sensor has failed is a speedometer that does not work at all or does not work correctly.

Most often the problem is an open circuit, so the first step is to visually inspect the speed sensor and its contacts. If there are traces of corrosion or dirt, they must be removed, the contacts must be cleaned and Litol applied to them.

Checking the speed sensor can be done in two ways: with and without removing the DSA. In both cases, a voltmeter will be required to check and diagnose the speed sensor.

The first way to check the speed sensor:

- remove the speed sensor, - determine which terminal is responsible for what (the sensor has three terminals in total: ground, voltage, pulse signal), - connect the incoming contact of the voltmeter to the pulse signal terminal, ground the second contact of the voltmeter to a metal part of the engine or car body, - when the speed sensor is rotated (to do this, you can throw a piece of tube over the sensor axis), the voltage and frequency in the voltmeter should increase.

The second way to check the speed sensor:

- jack up the car so that one wheel does not touch the ground, - connect the voltmeter contacts to the sensor in the same way as described above, - spin the raised wheel and monitor the change in voltage and frequency.

Speedometer functions

The sensor is primarily connected to the speedometer. For this reason, you need not only to know where the KamAZ speed sensor is located, to carefully monitor its serviceability, but also to take into account the functionality:

  • speed measurement and display;
  • displaying information about the distance traveled;
  • informing about the current time;
  • alarm about exceeding the permissible speed;
  • measurement of the number of pulses for correct reading of characteristics.

Speed sensors on KamAZ 43118 vehicles and other models must be operational for safe driving, both in the city and on the highways.

How to wind the speedometer on a KamAZ

The KamAZ-6520 or KamAZ Euro speedometer is adjusted using special devices that allow you to adjust the device’s performance. If you need to rewind the device or change the device data, you can contact specialists. But there is a way to do it yourself.

KamAZ is equipped with a speedometer and odometer, showing the mileage of the vehicle, and has a generator and engine system. The generator is the sensor, the engine is the receiver. The speedometer receives a three-phase signal from the generator.

The winding circuit of the device should create a similar three-phase signal with a 120° shift between phases. To change the data on the number of kilometers, you need to change the numbers not only on the speedometer, but also on the odometer. A device for winding measuring devices (twist, winder or winder) carries out such actions automatically. When twisting, the changed data of the electronic speedometer and all other electronic units are saved.

  9. A control unit, thanks to which the normal operation of the main units and equipment of the car is guaranteed.
  10. Audio system, if the car is equipped with one.

In order for the KAMAZ electrical circuit to operate in normal mode, the condition of the wiring must be at least satisfactory.

In addition, the operation of the electrical circuit is possible if:

  1. Rechargeable batteries. There are two of them in KAMAZ vehicles, they are connected to each other in series. The positive terminal of the battery is connected to the starter terminal, and the negative terminal is connected to the switch, and through it to the vehicle body. Both batteries are mounted in a special box located on the machine frame, behind the cab. Thanks to the batteries, normal operation of the ignition is ensured when the engine starts. In addition, thanks to the battery, it is possible to operate electrical equipment when the engine is turned off.
  2. Generator. The generator unit allows you to power electrical devices and systems while the engine is running. In addition, the battery is charged using the generator unit.

How to determine the malfunction?

Detecting breakdowns in equipment operation is possible with the involvement of a specialist or at home.

In general, there are two vehicle conditions in which a circuit failure can be determined:

  1. The engine does not start and the vehicle cannot be operated. There can be many reasons for the breakdown in this case. Equipment diagnostics should begin by checking the ignition switch, switchgear, spark plugs, high-voltage wires, starter assembly and, of course, the battery. In most cases, the cause can be solved by charging the battery, cleaning the spark plugs from carbon deposits, or replacing high-voltage wires. In addition, the reason may be a failed generator. Before you begin dismantling and disassembling the unit, you should check the quality of the generator belt tension. Perhaps the strap is loose or its tension is very strong, which is also not very good for the car.
  2. The engine can be started, but the equipment does not work or only works partially. A group of devices may not be working. For example, in your car the turn signal and windshield wiper blades stopped working at the same time. It would seem, how can these devices be connected to each other? But you need to take into account that these two systems operate from the steering column switch. And if it fails or there is a bad contact on its circuit, then the nodes simply cannot be started. If the engine starts, then some of the components do not work, then you should first check the fuses in the block; it is quite possible that one or part of them has simply blown. If the safety elements are working, and you are 100% sure that the electrical equipment is working, then you need to start diagnosing the wiring (the author of the video is the CarEnergy channel).

Do-it-yourself rewinding of the KamAZ electronic speedometer

The need to rewind the speedometer arises when you need to change the dashboard or engine. Winding should be done on all parts of the speedometer at once: the odometer measures mileage, the tachometer shows speed. You can only rewind the speedometer readings using a special device that will help you fine-tune all the indicators.

Different types of speedometers work in conjunction with certain sensors, for example, PPS 87.3802 is designed to work with speed sensors 4202.3843, and is suitable for the following KamAZ models: 4310, 5510, 55102, 53212, 43118, 5350 and others.

Electronic speedometers operate thanks to a three-phase signal coming from the generator. A special device - “winder”, “twist” - automatically winds the speedometer and odometer.

To adjust the speedometer, do you turn to specialists or do it yourself?

Tell me how to check the electronic speedometer?

In order to check the electronic speedometer, you first need to understand a little about how the electronic speedometer works and how it works. And it consists of an inductive sensor (installed on the gearbox) and a pointer on the dashboard. Since there is no drive shaft (such as on a mechanical speedometer), the readings are transmitted in the form of frequency pulses from the sensor to the gearbox converted from the rotational speed of the secondary shaft of the box. This number of these pulses exactly corresponds to the speed of the car. And the speedometer converts pulse signals into a mechanical indication.

When the electronic speedometer does not work, to check it you will need to: First remove the speed sensor. Then turn on the ignition and apply a flat (preferably wide) screwdriver to the underside of the inductive sensor, and then quickly move it back and forth. If the speed sensor is working properly, a pulse signal is generated and this should cause your speedometer needle to deflect. If the arrow does not move, you need to remove the dashboard to get to its connection connector.

Next, connect the multimeter probes to the sockets of the speedometer connector (on some cars they are marked on the connector itself), set the tester handle to voltmeter mode with a range of 0–3V and repeat the test with a screwdriver again. Now, when you remove the screwdriver from the speed sensor, the multimeter (voltmeter) needle should deviate; if this happens, then the sensor and its wiring are working, but the electronic speedometer is faulty and it’s worth checking it. When there is no change in readings on the multimeter or the needle does not deviate, then the sensor itself is faulty or there is a problem with its wiring.

speedometer failure on Kamaz

The KamAZ brake system is thought out to the smallest nuances, since the technical condition of the vehicle and the possibility of safe driving depend on it. The installed KamAZ speed sensor is an important device, as it allows you to monitor the technical performance of the vehicle.

Description of DS

As we have already said, the main purpose of the speedometer drive sensor is to accurately determine the speed of the vehicle. Thanks to this device, the model can always know at what speed his car is moving. As for the varieties, DS can be of the contact or non-contact type. Today, most of our compatriots prefer contactless options. Contact DS, despite all the advantages, have one significant drawback - they are prone to contamination, which in turn will lead to inaccuracy of the displayed readings.

Design and principle of operation

Structurally, according to the diagram, this part consists of:

  • speedometer drive;
  • housings;
  • as well as the controller itself with a connector for connecting to the on-board network.

As for the principle of operation, it is based on measuring the frequency level of signals from the controller, which is located on the gearbox housing or transfer case. At the output of the device, while driving, rectangular pulses are formed, the minimum value of which should be at least 1 volt, and the maximum value should be at least 5 volts.

According to international standards, the controller must generate about 6 thousand such pulses over one kilometer. The pulses themselves are subsequently converted into current, which is measured by a magnetoelectric device. It should be noted that the current value directly depends on the number of signals supplied per certain unit of time. That is, this value will be directly proportional to the speed of the vehicle.

In addition, thanks to the electronic circuit installed in the dashboard, the operation of the stepper motor is ensured by counting incoming signals. The latter is designed to rotate the counter reels, after which it displays the relevant information on a small screen, where the total and daily mileage of the car is shown. If we are talking about daily mileage, then this value can be reset to zero if necessary.

Symptoms of a problem

If the DS for some reason fails, this will lead to the control unit being unable to determine the speed of movement. However, this is not the only problem, since malfunctions in the performance of the power unit may also occur.

We suggest that you familiarize yourself in more detail with the signs of a malfunction, by which you can determine the failure of the DS:

  • the speedometer on the dashboard has either stopped working altogether or displays incorrect readings;
  • malfunctions appear in engine operation, in particular at idle speed;
  • fuel consumption increased;
  • engine performance has deteriorated, the power unit cannot reach the required speed;
  • the engine may stop spontaneously while idling, in particular when the driver tries to press the clutch to change gear;
  • if the car is equipped with an on-board computer, a Check indicator may appear on the dashboard;
  • if the car is equipped with an electric power steering, this unit may also fail;
  • in some cars, for example, Lada Kalina, failure of the diesel engine can also lead to increased sensitivity of the fuel level controller in the gas tank (the author of the video is the Autoelectrics HF channel).

As for the reasons, as a rule, they are caused by damage to the car's electrical wiring, so checking the functionality should begin with diagnosing the condition of the contacts and electrical circuits. Perhaps the problem lies in oxidized or dirty contacts, so they will need to be cleaned and treated with a lubricant, for example, Lithol. A broken wiring should be looked for first of all near the connection connector, since in this place the wires are bent and usually frayed.

Also, the cause of the malfunction may be a violation of the integrity of the wiring insulation in the area where the exhaust manifold is installed. At elevated temperatures, the insulation may melt, causing the device to short out. Also, the DS may transmit incorrect readings due to a worn speedometer cable. Over time, cracks and tears form on it, which contributes to the failure of the controller.

  • For diagnosis you will need:
  • 12 Volt motor;
  • flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • flashlight; jacks and stands;
  • instructions for repairing or servicing your car.

To check the speedometer, raise the front passenger side of the vehicle using a jack. For information on how to do this safely, read the article (Replacing and restoring shock absorbers). Remove the front panel (dashboard) to access the instrument cluster. On some car models you can do without this operation, so carefully read the repair and operating instructions for your car. Remove the instrument cluster and unscrew the cable fixing nut from the indicator, start the engine and engage 4th gear. Check if the cable is spinning in the protective casing? If yes, turn off the engine, insert and tighten the cable end, then start the engine again, engage 4th gear and look at the indicator readings. If the arrow does not change position, the indicator is faulty and must be replaced.

If the cable does not turn when the engine is running and the gear is engaged, it is necessary to turn off the engine and remove the cable from the drive located on the driver's side of the gearbox. Pull the cable out of the engine compartment and inspect the ends to see if the shape (square) is damaged. Twist the tip on one side of the cable and observe the tip on the other side. If both tips rotate synchronously, without effort, and the edges of the tips are not licked, then the problem is a worn drive gear, so it needs to be replaced. This operation is described in the vehicle repair and operating instructions.

Diagnostics and repair of electronic speedometer

For diagnosis and repair you will need:

  • flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • tester;
  • a set of keys;
  • scanner for an injection engine (you can use a regular oscilloscope instead).

Run self-diagnosis of the on-board computer (BC). On most fuel-injected cars manufactured after 2000, the BC supports this function. If the BC gives an error, you need to decipher it using a special table, which is located in the instructions for servicing and repairing your car. But, the diagnostic results will show whether the entire speedometer system is working or not. To fix the problem, you will have to look for the damage yourself. To do this, lift the car as described above. Connect the oscilloscope to the middle contact of the speed sensor (installed in place of the speedometer drive) and the positive contact of the battery. Start the engine and engage 1st gear.

A working sensor will produce a pulse signal with a voltage of at least 9 Volts with a frequency of 4 - 6 Hertz. If the sensor is working properly, you need to turn off the gear and use a tester to check the wire that connects the sensor to the electronic control unit (ECU) controller. Or use an oscilloscope to check the sensor signals at the ECU input. If there are signals, you need to check the terminals and wire that connects the ECU and the instrument cluster (speedometer indicator). If you have a special scanner, then it is advisable to check the speedometer indicator, this will allow you to more accurately determine the cause of the malfunction.

However, on domestic models, including 4308, 53504 (the name appeared on some modifications after the restyling of 44108), the technical system has been improved. You can also read about Separating the pads on a KamAZ - Correct installation of the pads.

  • lack of information about mileage and speed due to inoperative devices;
  • malfunction of the engine (impaired idling speed, excessive fuel consumption, loss of power);

  • speed measurement and display;
  • displaying information about the distance traveled;
  • informing about the current time;
  • alarm about exceeding the permissible speed;
  • measurement of the number of pulses for correct reading of characteristics.

Speed sensors on KamAZ 43118 vehicles and other models must be operational for safe driving, both in the city and on the highways.

ZR test: do you know everything about speedometers?

Every car must be equipped with a working speed sensor (DS). This device allows you to accurately determine the speed of a vehicle and display information about it on the speedometer. Operating a car with a non-working DS is not allowed, as this can lead to an emergency on the road. How to check the speed sensor and replace the device yourself - read about it below.
