Freightliner is the leading manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks and tractors in the United States.
Currently it is owned by the Daimler-Chrysler concern and produces trucks under the Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star brands. They are sold in many countries around the world.
Since 2004, the company began official sales in Russia, and these large, comfortable cars can be found today more and more often in domestic spaces.
Freightliner plants annually assemble more than one hundred thousand trucks of various models, as well as a significant number of specialized machines and equipment. But the core of the Freightliner model line is long-haul trucks and tractors with tonnage from 4 to 41 tons.
The company's production covers 6 classes at once - from 2 to 8. At the same time, the most prestigious trucks of class 8 are tractors that make up about 30% of Freightliner's total production.
It is thanks to this massive scale that American long-haul freight transportation is primarily characterized by the power, carrying capacity and comfort of Freightliner trucks.
At the moment, the company produces dozens of models and modifications of cars, many of which are small-scale. But there are trucks that stand out even among Fredliners, being true legends of the American heavy auto industry.
Freightliner Columbia
Freightliner Columbia tractors are an American classic, that is, a reliable, large, comfortable tractor that is capable of plowing roads in all directions for many years. The model has an aerodynamically adjusted cabin, due to which it is quite economical.
The Freightliner Columbia train is produced with seven types of cabins, including options with a sleeping bag (SleeperCab) and without it (Day Cab).
Regardless of the type, the model’s cabin provides a comfortable driver’s seat, which is achieved through a good climate control system, high-quality sound insulation and excellent visibility in all directions.
An interesting feature of cabins with a berth is that you can exit the sleeping bag through a separate door, which is especially convenient when a crew of two people sets off on the road.
Freightliner Columbia is an excellent, powerful and unpretentious tractor that can haul up to 30 tons of cargo.
Freightliner Century
Freightliner Century is a truck tractor for long-haul cargo transportation. This is a high-tech model that is characterized by increased safety for the driver, as well as excellent performance.
The Freightliner Century was developed with the goal of simplifying maintenance and achieving a long operating life. The original features of the model were a self-adjusting clutch system, as well as an aerodynamic hood, which provides good fuel economy.
The Freightliner Century truck tractor was one of the first American trucks to truly use durable and lightweight composite materials on a large scale. This made it possible to minimize the weight of the vehicle itself and increase its payload, reaching 34,900 kg.
Since this is a Freightliner and just an American truck, the driver's workplace and the cabin as a whole are very comfortable. The interior is spacious, quiet, and is not disturbed by any street noise or engine roar. To increase comfort, an exclusive system was also introduced that dampens cabin vibrations while driving.
Freightliner Argosy
The Freightliner Argosy is one of the manufacturer's few cabover models, as American drivers are notoriously disliked. However, this car is so good that it has taken root even in the USA, not to mention Europe.
The Freightliner Argosy model was created for the transportation of long cargo. The vehicle received a front wheel steering angle of up to 50 degrees and a well-thought-out length, making the truck very maneuverable. At the same time, thanks to the low profile and wide drive axles (their width is 2,590 mm), the car behaves steadily in turns and is generally predictable on the road.
Thanks to the abandonment of the hood design, the Freightliner Argosy cabin was made spacious and comfortable even from the American point of view. It should be noted that in terms of comfort, Argosy is one of the best Freightliner models.
Freightliner Classic XL
The Freightliner Classic XL tractor unit is one of the most famous trucks in the world. Its silhouette is recognizable from dozens of films and commercials, and its advantages can be seen at the very first glance.
The Freightliner Classic XL is one of the world's longest tractors, measuring 3.33 meters from bumper to rear wall. In general, the cabin of the model is large and spacious, perfectly equipped with everything necessary for a long journey.
The sleeping compartment is separated from the driver's seat by a partition, so that while one crew member is driving, the second can get a complete rest.
The exterior of the car is a mass of chrome, huge gas tanks, high exhaust pipes and other features that are classic for American truck tractors.
The model is powerful and fast due to the fact that it is equipped with a serious fourteen-liter engine that develops up to 608 horsepower. The Freightliner Classic XL is truly a king on any road!
Freightliner Coronado
The Freightliner Coronado is a truck tractor you can't resist. The machine turned out to be powerful, economical, reliable, comfortable and high-tech, equipped with modern intelligent monitoring and control systems.
Design-wise, it's a classic Freightliner with lots of chrome detailing, a long nose and huge exposed fuel tanks. The cabin cannot be called anything other than luxurious and spacious - it is designed so that the driver gets maximum pleasure both from driving and from relaxing in the sleeping compartment.
The model is equipped with a new “Driver Message Center”. This is an intelligent system that reports downtime, current fuel volume, all faults and many other things.
Such an on-board computer makes tasks more accurate and driving as safe as possible, since it promptly reports any, even minor, problems.
In addition, the model turned out to be powerful thanks to the use of a 625 hp engine, and maneuverable due to the fact that the steering angle of the front wheels reaches 50 degrees. Freightliner M2
The Freightliner M2 is a medium-duty truck that is available with or without a main cab equipped with a sleeper bag, designed for urban and suburban distribution. Freightliner M2 is one of the few models from the manufacturer that has a hybrid version - the M2e Hybrid.
The car is equipped with Cummins ISC or ISB engines, powerful but at the same time quite economical. In addition to the standard truck, the Freightliner M2 is available as a tractor unit with a payload capacity of up to 30 tons. Such vehicles are especially popular in Alaska because they are well suited for use in harsh climatic conditions.
Freightliner FL
Freightliner FL is one of the most popular models from this automaker, which has received many modifications. At the moment, 6 main series of FL trucks with a weight of 8.2-23.6 tons are produced.
Different modifications are equipped with different engines. The most common are power units from Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel. Engine power varies from 161 to 332 hp.
It should be noted that Freightliner FL trucks in all variations are especially in demand in transport companies involved in the delivery of universal cargo, since these medium-sized and powerful vehicles are optimally suited for solving diverse tasks.
Freightliner Cascadia
Freightliner Cascadia is one of the most modern truck tractors from the manufacturer, designed on an entirely new platform.
The model is aimed primarily at the American market, therefore it is large, comfortable, spacious and not the most economical by European standards due to the 455 horsepower engine.
But still, the consumption is not critically high, because the car has a modern lightweight composite cabin with good aerodynamics, and is also equipped with a number of control systems that force the engine to always work in optimal mode.
The cabin turned out to be really spacious. The meter-wide bed, a large number of compartments and shelves for storing various things make long trips quite comfortable. Noise insulation, a system for neutralizing vibrations in the cabin, powerful air conditioning, an electronic driver assistant - everything here is optimized to ensure that the truck driver gets as tired as possible on the road.
Overall, the Freightliner Cascadia is a new, modern truck tractor that still retains the classic American features of the Freightliner family of trucks, each of which is an American driver's dream!
These are just some of the models currently produced under the Freightliner brand. The company is widely represented on the market of special vehicles, including delivery and firefighting vehicles.
The main models are the founders of fairly large families, differing in the installed engine, the presence of a berth, layout and capabilities.
But one thing can be said about any vehicle with the Freightliner badge on the hood - they are the big, comfortable, reliable and very safe vehicles that truck drivers around the world dream of.

Vinzel
A good mod of the American bonnet tractor Freightliner Century in excellent performance, the model of this truck appeared on the highways of the USA, and then all over the world in the mid-90s. At that time it was an ultra-modern tractor, with high power characteristic of all Americans and very high efficiency. It is also worth noting the advanced electronic components, for example, in the event of a malfunction, the driver can, by pressing one button, carry out a full diagnosis and easily determine the malfunction.
From the first minutes of testing the Freightliner Century, it becomes clear that this truck is completely ready for work and is in no way inferior to other tractors from Euro Truck Simulator 2. A wonderful 3D body model and a very good interior are pleasing to the eye, and correct physics and a 600 horsepower engine allow you to comfortably transport any cargo over long distances.
In the workshop you can install additional mirrors on the truck, change the front bumper and side body kit. There are three types of skirts, each of which is lined up in a row and covers the gas tank and then all the way to the rear axle, and you can hang curtains in the cabin, the tractor can be painted in any color, it also comes with unique tires and two types of wheels.
By the way, when choosing tuning, do not forget to set the exhaust animation at the highest point on the exhaust pipe!

Freightliner Century
The differences between American and European tractors are so significant that trucks built on different shores
The Atlantics will not seem the same to anyone. If the hoodless layout of European tractors is determined by regulations limiting the total length of the road train to sixteen and a half meters, then the hooded layout of American highway tractors is determined by a limit of 14.3 m, but only for the semi-trailer, and not for the road train as a whole. Now imagine a bonnetless road train 16.5 m long, and imagine a road train of the same length, but with a hood arrangement. Which of these two road trains will be equipped with a longer and, accordingly, more spacious semi-trailer? — of course, cabover). For this reason, all cargo transportation in Europe is carried out using cabover vehicles. In the States, you can “fasten” a tractor of almost any length to a semi-trailer - this possibility has led to the fact that some American truckers lengthen the frame of already huge tractors, and then equip an entire “apartment on wheels” on it.
Freightliner Century is a classic American tractor, which has all the advantages and
disadvantages of the hood layout. The main advantage of the hood arrangement is better safety compared to hoodless trucks - the long engine compartment absorbs impact energy very effectively, as well as easy access to the engine. The most significant disadvantages of such Century tractors lie in worse maneuverability and visibility compared to cabover vehicles. Regardless of the layout, American trucks are no longer killed, reliable, easy to maintain, and in most cases they are equipped with three axles, which increases their cross-country ability on unpaved roads. Thanks to the advantages described above, many of our drivers and companies involved in cargo transportation chose the Freightliner Century, the truck reviewed at autobelyavcev.ru this time.
You can get acquainted with the appearance of this American truck from the photo of the Fredliner Century attached to the article. "Fred" is offered in two modifications - C112 and C120. The number in inches indicates the distance from the front bumper to the rear wall of the sleeping bag. In most cases, long Freightliner Century C120 were imported to Russia and the CIS countries.
To reduce curb weight, the cabin and both fuel tanks, each with a capacity of 450 liters, are made of aluminum, while the giant bonnet and fairings are made of plastic. The curb weight of the tractor itself is 7,100 kg, and the total weight of the road train is 60 tons. The Century tractor is 7,900 mm long, which is significantly longer than the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado.
The width of the American truck is 2,500mm, height is 3,700mm. The overseas tractor is equipped with tires: 295/75 R22.5.
The Centuri's front fascia may seem outdated today, but not to fans of American trucks.
In addition to such familiar options as electric windows and mirrors, the sleeping compartment cabinets can be equipped with: a refrigerator, TV, microwave and even a dry closet! The width of the sleeping berth on the 120th “Fred” is 70 inches, which corresponds to 175 cm. As the saying goes, “An American forgives everything when he’s on vacation.”
Freightliner Century Specifications
The Eaton - Fuller Ultra Shift ten-speed manual transmission is not equipped with synchronizers, which increases its service life to up to a million kilometers. Drivers of the Fredliner Century change gears carefully selecting speed.
Often, a 12.7 liter Detroit Diesel engine is installed under the hood of the Centuri. The power of this power plant is 450 hp, and the maximum torque is 2,270 N.M. This engine allows you to reach a speed of 120 km on the highway.
A feature of the Detroit Diesel engine is that it stalls on its own after 5 minutes of idling, as well as when the oil or coolant level is insufficient.
This unit was painted green from the factory.
The Caterpillar engine with a volume of 14.6 liters and a power of 460 hp was painted yellow, and the rarest Cummins Mercedes-Benz MBE 400 engine with a power of 450 hp was painted red.
Freightliner Century Price
You can buy a 2002 Fredliner Century for $20,000. The price of Freightliner Century in comparison with European tractors is not particularly high.
Russia is a huge country and not all of its territory has good roads.
Driving their truck to the east, truckers can drive a hundred kilometers along a dirt road or snowy road, where there are no people or other cars, where you can’t count on help and everything depends only on the driver and his car.
It is for such conditions that they buy a Fredliner Centuri, yes - it will be cramped on the narrow streets of Europe, but Russians, like Americans, love large and reliable cars - this even makes our and American truck drivers similar.
Century Class
American long-haul tractors are becoming increasingly popular among domestic auto carriers. If you stand for an hour or two on the Moscow-Petersburg highway, you will notice that a third of all passing tractors are cars from the North American continent. Is it only the low price of American tractors that is the reason for this invasion, or maybe these machines have other undeniable advantages over the “Europeans”? To find the answer to this question, we took the American Freightliner Century Class FLC 112 tractor for testing. Only this tractor turned out to be a surprise.
At first glance, everything is as usual - a cabin with a “sleeping bag”, three axles, an exhaust pipe leading up, but you look at it and feel: something is wrong! It turns out that this tractor was specially shortened in Russia. Why this was necessary, we will explain a little later, but for now we note that this car was produced in 2000 and has a mileage of almost a million kilometers (965 thousand kilometers). Compared to the same type of cabover “Europeans”, American tractors look like a legend and attract everyone’s attention. Even during the test, we often heard: “Hey, you guys have the most beautiful tractor!”
There was a sense of pride in the vehicle being tested, although the Century Class is far from the most luxurious American tractor - in the USA it is an ordinary standard work truck for large transport companies, and the most “sophisticated” tractors are usually used in America by private operators. But in Russia even Freightliner is handsome! And there are people who are ready to buy an American tractor just because of this beauty. The rest get a spectacular appearance as a free bonus when purchasing a car. Another factor that is rumored to be almost decisive in the choice between a European and an American car is the large sleeping compartment on cars from the USA.
At first glance, this is indeed the case; the sleeping compartment of the “Americans” is not just big, it’s huge! And after watching enough advertising brochures, in your imagination you also picture the mandatory rich equipment of such a “sleeping bag” (intruders, too, by the way!), but in reality, cars come to Russia in the cheapest configurations. In addition, in America, additional equipment is often installed on cars by transport companies themselves, and they then transfer it from one car to another, so not every car can have a microwave oven or refrigerator.
But radio tape recorders and televisions on American tractors generally operate in other ranges and are not suitable in Russia. Therefore, in reality, the “sleeper” of an American car is simply a large living space, without any frills. And all its advantage comes down to only one thing - unlike the “European”, here you can take a couple of extra steps from the driver’s seat to the sleeping bunk. The driver's cabin on an American tractor is narrower than on any European truck, and the windshields and side windows are much smaller. Optimists will call this combination cozy, but pessimists will definitely complain about the cramped cabin.
But with a shortage of space around the driver, the American type of driver’s seating position cannot be called uncomfortable - on the contrary, all vehicle controls are focused on the driver and literally surround him. If we talk about the convenience of the driver’s workplace based on the results of tests carried out at the Dmitrovsky test site, we can note that the Freightliner Century Class tractor complies with the Russian requirements of GOST 37.001.413-86 for the layout of the driver’s workplace, except for one position - the brake and fuel pedals are located very close to each other. According to GOST, it must be at least 50 millimeters, and for Freightliner it is 40 millimeters.
Freightliner's seats are soft, with armrests, like on home chairs - American drivers primarily value the comfort of the workplace, even at the expense of freedom of movement around the cabin, since it is not easy to get through the narrow cabin into the “sleeping bag”. But the floor of the hood cabin is completely flat over its entire area. By the way, the passenger seat in the Freightliner is clearly separated from the driver's area, and in the test car it was installed rigidly, without any suspension - passengers are clearly not welcome here. At first glance, the inside of the cabin on the Freightliner is made in an American style, but many solutions have something in common with European tractors (this is reflected in the entry of Freightliner LLC into the Daimler Chrysler concern).
The light gray color of the interior leaves an impression of neatness and makes the cabin light, but all the drawers in the cabin are without lids and are covered only with nets. The filling of the glove boxes is always visible. There is also a closed storage box under the sleeping bunk, but its volume is very small, since the main place is occupied by the autonomous heating system. But not only cup holders are built into the front panel console, but also a trash can, which you won’t immediately notice the first time. I would also like to say about the convenience of boarding the Freightliner cabin.
On a hooded tractor, the length of the footrests is not limited, and the steps are not located strictly above each other, like a ladder in a tower crane, but offset inward, as on a regular flight of stairs. It’s just that for a complete ideal, a higher doorway of the cabin is not enough; tall people have to “watch their heads” when passing through the doorway. Century Freightliner widely uses Detroit Diesel engines (Detroit Diesel is also part of the Daimler Chrysler concern), but the test vehicle was equipped with a Cummins ISM engine with 370 horsepower.
American power units, when used correctly, are famous for their long service life. Apparently for this reason, most of the Freightliner Class's engine compartment is located deep under the cab. With this arrangement, frequent engine repairs are simply impossible! But servicing an American tractor is convenient. The large plastic hood can be easily and quickly folded back manually; to do this, you just need to unfasten the two latches on the sides of the hood. True, there is also a negative point in this - the engine compartment is easily accessible to anyone, because the engine hood is not additionally locked.
The filler necks for technical fluids are collected under the hood in one place and are convenient for the driver to control, but they are located quite high, although if you wish, you can add the necessary fluids to the tanks directly from the ground, without getting up anywhere. Also from ground level, but from the other side of the machine, you can check the oil level and replace the air filter. A manual transmission on a Freightliner with a shift pattern typical of American tractors. The clutch here is depressed only when starting to move; subsequent gear changes are carried out without pressing the clutch pedal.
Due to the rare use of the clutch, the pedal is made without amplifiers, and in order to depress the clutch all the way, you need to apply a fair amount of force. In general, you need to get used to changing gears without a clutch, since it is difficult to use such a gearbox without skill. At first, shifts often turn out to be unsuccessful - either the speed of the car is no longer suitable for changing gears, or the engine speed has already dropped and you have to change the throttle. Over time, you get used to a non-synchronized box, and all switching is accomplished the first time.
But it seems that you will never be able to get used to the heavy clutch pedal, especially if you have to work this pedal constantly in traffic jams. Upon external inspection, it seems that the large hood of the car falls into the driver’s field of vision through the windshield and creates a large “dead zone” in front of the car, but sitting in the driver’s seat, you see that the hood has a thoughtful sloping shape and almost does not interfere with the driver. Fact: in terms of visibility, the Freightliner Century Class fully complies with the requirements of GOST R 51266, with the exception of the normalization of the windshield wiper grip.
And even just a little bit was not enough to meet the GOST standards - only 3% of the regulated zone remained unresolved. While driving a Freightliner Century Class, you immediately notice the abundance of rear-view mirrors around the car. There are six of them in total - with such a “dressing glass” the situation around the tractor is perfectly controlled. And an additional window at the bottom of the passenger door eliminates the possibility of a “dead zone” on the right side of the car. But there is one flaw in the arrangement of the tractor’s mirrors: if the passenger in the right seat decides to hold on to the handrail on the windshield pillar (and the handrail is specially made there for this purpose), then his hand will completely block the right spherical mirror of the tractor.
Driving an American tractor is no more difficult than a European one, unless, of course, you count the problems with a non-synchronized gearbox. The ISM engine requires preliminary spin-up when starting from a standstill and when changing gears. And it seems that the revolutions are not very high, but the rumble produced by the engine is solid. European tractors are much quieter under similar conditions. The engine's power reserve is enough for a road train loaded to its full weight to have acceptable dynamics at any speed, but many American cars are equipped with more powerful engines and compared with 370 hp. not impressive.
But in terms of fuel consumption, the Freightliner Century Class with the ISM engine is very economical. According to the results of fuel efficiency measurements, the “American” is superior to similar European tractors. Naturally, the comparison was made with more powerful “Europeans”, but let’s not forget that the Freightliner is three-axle, not two-axle, that is, there is no really noticeable difference in fuel consumption, but the maximum speed on the Freightliner can be achieved greater. The limiter is triggered at a speed of 102 km/h, and on European tractors the limit occurs at 90 km/h.
The Freightliner's working braking system requires careful handling - if you press the brake pedal a little more, the car starts to brake very sharply, but if you release it a little, you won't feel any braking at all. If you only need to slow down the road train slightly, then it is much more convenient to use the semi-trailer brake, the so-called “parachute”. A long lever with the inscription “Trailer brake” is located on the instrument panel and you can easily reach it with your fingers without letting go of the steering wheel.
At first there were concerns that it would be difficult to manually control the braking force on the trailer using this lever, but they were in vain. The parking brake system with separate braking of the tractor and semi-trailer also turned out to be convenient. It is activated by two large buttons on the instrument panel. Easy to control, convenient to turn on and off. A mileage of a million kilometers for American tractors is considered only half of their service life, but such a vehicle will still need repairs sooner or later - to repair American trucks, you need not only original spare parts, but also special inch tools.
True, the engines on tractors (Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar) are adapted to the metric system. Finding a service and a store with spare parts for American trucks is easy only in the Moscow region and St. Petersburg, but in other areas problems may arise with the service of “Americans”. You also need to take into account the longer delivery time for spare parts from the USA than for a European tractor, but American spare parts are cheaper.

Features and Benefits of Freightliner Century Class S/T
Everything Freightliner for the Century Class S/T is designed to improve performance. The aerodynamic hood reduces air resistance, helps improve visibility and reduce fuel consumption. A specially designed and tested grille increases airflow and optimizes cooling efficiency. Freightliner Century Class hood and fenders are made from strong, lightweight materials, reducing overall cab weight and allowing for more payload capacity.
For all the technological advantages of the Freightliner , driver safety aspects have not been overlooked. The Freightliner Century Class S/T is unique in that it is the first North American Class 8 truck to have a cab that meets or exceeds the stringent Swedish and European ECE R-29 crash test requirements. Additionally, anti-lock braking system (ABS), driver-side airbags, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher are standard. Other safety components such as Roll Stability Advisor, Roll Stability Control, and Lane Guidance system are available as an option.
- Roll Stability Advisor monitors the angular oscillatory movement of sprung parts relative to an axis located in the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the vehicle, and warns if the tractor is on the verge of skidding or overturning.
- Roll Stability Control - This system automatically reduces power and brakes the tractor in the event of a skid.
- Lane Guidance System (“marking guidance system”) - consists of a video camera and a special computer that monitors the position of road markings relative to the car, and warns the driver when he approaches the marking lines without turning on the corresponding turn signal; this helps prevent driving into the oncoming lane or onto the side of the road if the driver falls asleep or is distracted. A strong warning sound is heard from the side to which the machine is deviating. To do this, 2 speakers are installed: one on the right and the other on the left.
Driver Message Center
The Freightliner Century Class S/T driver's station features the latest technology advancements to enhance productivity, performance and safety. The Driver Message Center is an on-board computer that displays timely, easy-to-understand information about vehicle parameters, including fuel economy, outside temperature, equipment malfunctions, fluid levels, trip times, driving distance and idle time.
Convenient engine maintenance
The Freightliner Century Class S/T hood opens 90 degrees for easy engine maintenance. Transparent reservoirs allow you to instantly check fluid levels. The fenders are attached to the hood rather than the chassis, allowing easy access to the engine.
